Diamond/Pearl/Platinum

(Never played Black and White)
I see no reason as to why R/S/E would be held to such high acclaim, beyond even that of G/S/C (other than nostalgia).
G/S/C introduced breeding, time-based events, the ability for Pokémon to hold items, Pokégear (map, phone, radio, watch), Steel and Dark types, many new kinds of Pokéballs (and allowed you to create them), and shiny Pokemon. And they did it all and still managed allow access to two regions.
R/S/E introduced double battles, contests, and Pokéblocks. They did away with day/night cycles, many of the time-based events, the phone, radio, making Pokéballs, and had no way of bringing your Pokémon from the previous games.
It seems pretty straight forward to me...
