Many generals feared X-day. Otherwise known as the Invasion of Japan. Assuming the nuclear weapons did not force Japan to surrender, the only option left would have been the full scale invasion of the Japanese home islands.

The reason this was so feared was the resistance the Japanese put up on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Although the Japanese fleet was all but destroyed, they still had a 4 million man army ready to defend their home. Not to mention the millions of civilians that were taught the Americans will -blam!- and kill every civilian, so they were openly hostile to the American forces.

Looking at the casualties from the Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the casualties on both sides would have been in the millions on this scale, and the war could have easily gone on until 1947. So, how do you think the coarse of history would have changed had we invaded the Japanese home islands?

That is impossible to say but i would think we would have been victorious at an amazing cost as you have stated.

The atom bomb not being used may have made the cold war a bit less dangerous but i cant think of anything else.

Ad Infinitum

The Allies would have still won, but the death toll would be much larger. Both sides would experience heavy casualties.

I've got a fan!

Japan would probably no longer have been a sovereign country if the Allies had invaded it.

I am an orange mist amongst a sea of blue, so my flames may stand out and represent all those who trully believe in this great sacriment of Bungie history, let my story be told as the only legendary still standing even after I fall Just as my comrades did so graciously to fight for the true loyal.
If you have legendary, would you stand by my side and go forth into a sea blue and demise as my brothers fighting for those who are trully loyal to Bungie?

More rivalry, death, loss of land, and it could have potentially started an uprising if you think of the prior events in history that have to do with invasions of such quantity.

I'm Gourlay, I'm only here because I didn't know we had the option to leave.

I think that we would just use a naval blockade around Japan to stop anyone from getting in or out. Then we would just use surrounding islands for airfields to bomb japan, mostly military bases, farms, factories, etc. Sooner or later they would have to surrender. Either the U.S. Military would use this, or they would just make more nuclear bombs on Japan till they just gave in to a surrender.

There's no way to get back experiences you missed.
So start right now today and risk furiousness for bliss.

The United States would own Japan if that's what happened.

I think I love you...

Using the Atom bomb, despite how scary and evil it is, was the only option we had to avoid an invasion of that magnitude.

For that sole reason, President Truman will always be my most respected President for making such a difficult decision like that.

Es ist Zeit für einige Gefahr-pay

Allies (Yes, The US, AND the rest) would have used conventional bombs to bomb Japan into submission... I do not believe they would actually use a full scale assault, they would rather have the populace dwindle through starvation.

Marley: next time try to be a little for inconspicuous.
John: What do you mean?
Marley: John, we grow lots of gear, right?
John: Yeah loads...
Marley: So try not to come back with a wasted girl and a packet of fertilizer!

I would be highly surprised if the US actually invaded. It's far more likely that Japan would be starved into submission and ravaged by incendiary bombs, forcing Japan into surrender over the course of maybe nine months or more.
