Star Wars, Eragon, The Elder Scrolls...seriously, this is the biggest cliche in the book.

Anyway, here's my question: why would you name your country "The Empire"? That would make you sound...I don't know...evil?

ummm...

Because that is the form of government that is being used and it is the biggest/only one around...?

Most of those factions have full names - 'The Empire' is just abbreviated. Star Wars has the 'Galactic Empire,' for instance, and I'm pretty sure that the empire in Elder Scrolls has an official name.

The concept of empires is kind of grand and intimidating, so making it sound darker is usually the point.

Because empire is a general term.

  • 12.25.2012 8:32 PM PDT

Because the Dynasty would sound too oriental

Evil? I thought it always made them sound badass.

I do not understand how it is cliche. Empires are something that have been happening throughout our history. They become large enough to expand and conquer land and other people, and eventually fall apart.

I'm talking about naming your country "The Empire" in fiction. Empires in history had actual names. Rome, Persia, Russia.

But in fiction, it's just The Empire.

Star Wars = Galactic Empire
The Elder Scrolls = Cyrodilic Empire/Septim Empire

Not sure about Eragon.

I remember its full name being mentioned in Inheritance. Can't remember it, though. Know it started with a "B", though. Let me look it up.
