Why? Because it is basically Batman Begins reskinned. What do I mean by that? I mean every major plot point in the Dark Knight Rises is the same as in Batman Begins.

Just like in Batman Begins, we wait an awfully long time before we actually see Bruce Wayne in the Batman costume. In Begins, Bruce went through a series of life challenges and intense training before he became Batman. In Rises, Bruce has rejected his Batman persona but, eventually, when circumstances change, has to train because his body is so wrecked.

In Batman Begins, Dr. Jonathan Crane (a.k.a. The Scarecrow) threatens Gotham with the use of fear-inducing toxin that he puts into the city's water supply. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bane brings Gotham to its knees after he puts explosives in the city's cement (to cripple the infrastructure), and then threatens Gotham with a neutron bomb.

In Rises, Bane releases all of the prisoners from the local jails, which results in mass hysteria on the streets of Gotham. In Batman Begins, all of the prisoners of Arkham Asylum are released, resulting in mass hysteria on the streets of Gotham.

For most of Batman Begins, we are led to believe that the criminal mastermind behind the terror plot seizing Gotham is Dr. Crane. (Jonathan, not Frazier.) Later, we find out that Crane is just the point man in this operation and the true mastermind is revealed. In Rises, Bane seems to be the man in charge, but we later learn that he's nothing more than a lackey for someone else who has been running the show from behind the scenes.

And, yes, in Batman Begins it's revealed that Ra's al Ghul has been secretly behind the threat to destroy Gotham all along. Unfortunately, Al Ghul died in Batman Begins so that trope couldn't be exactly duplicated for The Dark Knight Rises. So this time it's Ra's al Ghul's daughter, Talia al Ghul, who has been secretly in charge of the threat to destroy Gotham. And Talia, just like her father, is killed by an object that acts as a mode of transportation -- only this time it's a large truck instead of a train.

Other, minor details stolen from Batman Begins:

*Subplot about Alfred threatening to leave (although he actually does in TDKR)

*Subplot about someone trying to take over Wayne's company

Are you trying to troll and not be on topic? And nice assumption you're making buddy.

I like the TDKR, I just don't like how it copies BB too much. The only "popular" film I hate is the Hobbit.

Yes but that's expected for a sequel, I'm talking about plot points that were just ripped off.

GAAAAYYY

Both have batman in it.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

The similarities were intended, Nolan was drawing his series to a close by bringing things "full circle".

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The initial scene with the plane, which had no special effects, proves you wrong. It was not lazy.

Every major plot point?

Including Batman's back being broken? Including Bruce being thrown in a prison? Including the main antagonist basically seperating Gotham from the rest of the world? Inluding Batman faking his death to be able to escape and live a new life?

No.

  • 12.26.2012 8:54 AM PDT

Heres another one: I like them both.

  • 12.26.2012 8:55 AM PDT

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

So it's lazy because it shares similarities with the original?

I disagree. It wasn't simply a copy and paste job, they made new and old characters fit with the established story without sacrificing continuity.

The main theme is 'rise' which you generally can assume that in order for the high-point to be hit, a low-point had to be established [In movie-world that is]. So in that sense Bruce is revisiting his roots, Why is he Batman? Has being Batman changed him? Has it weakened his resolve or strengthened it? All of these questions are answered. Most of questions can be seen in the first movie but some of these can't be answered in BB because not enough progression has been made. That's where the similarity lies.

People trying to take over Wayne Enterprises is nothing new, having it come up again is still a valid story-point. [You can add that to Bruce's dynamic/ How he has issues outside of being Batman] Having Arkham break out under Bane's wishes of Anarchy is similar to BB because that was Ra's original plan.

Bane and Talia's plotline is a continuation of Ra's plan therefore similar actions are enacted under different circumstances. It was Talia's mission to finish what her Father had started. I hardly think that's lazyness using continuity to advance the plot.

Oh yeah about Alfred. Him actually leaving for real this time shows how of an all time low, Bruce is in. He lost [momentarily] his most loyal friend because of his obsession to save Gothem no matter what he does to himself to achieve it.

Alfred threatening to leave Bruce was always a sign to show the viewers and Bruce, that he cared. I think it's a very good plot device cause it quite effective with character relationship. Again I don't think using this is lazy because it's been done before, if anything this movie took it to new heights.

That doesn't mean just redoing Batman Begins with a bigger scale.

But thats not what they did. You're being dramatic for the sake of being critical.
