A dog is not a person. It's the owners responsibility to keep the animal on a leash to avoid issues like this.

Why does it matter that it was a dog instead of a person? If he can shoot a dog that randomly runs into his yard and doesn't threaten him, why shouldn't he be able to do the same to a person?

Because it's an animal?

I'd just like to point out that when you are on someones property, regardless of who you are (animal or human). That person has every right to shoot you for any reason whatsoever. It's private property, just because there isn't a sign saying you can't walk on the grass doesn't mean you can, even by accident. It was the dog owners fault all this happened for letting this happen.

They can certainly shoot you for any reason. The right? Specifically that it's okay to kill someone on your land and that the police won't be filing criminal charges on the basis of murder?

Nope.

You're on his property. So long as he's not a dumb ass, he can just say he did it out of possible self defense and he can walk away Scott Free.

You can't shoot someone for setting foot on your property in nearly every single American state.

America =/= Texas

Without The Flood, I wouldn't know what an opinion is.

Hearing only from her side, his reaction seemed excessive.

+1 for you good sir.

I'd be going to jail if that were my dog.

I like dogs, I nearly crashed my car the other day to avoid one. Clearly a young pup. The owner didn't have it on a lead so it just ran into the road. At most he'd have just had to have asked the owner to take it inside.

Surely a simple "hey, get your dog out of here" could have saved everyone a lot of time and anguish.

What a dick.

There is just something magical about leaning your head back, letting your eyes roll into the back of your head, and taking a piss while floating in the swimming pool.

This story happened near my town and found it ridiculous.

A woman from out of town visiting family and friends for the holidays was playing fetch with her 1 year old chocolate lab when the pup ran into the neighbors yard. How did the neighbor respond, by shooting and killing it with his shotgun.

Justified.

If the dog really wasn't on a leash, it should have been.

However, the man shouldn't have reacted the way he did.

Hell, even in Texas if you did that you'd be thrown in jail. Humans can tresspass because they should know better; dogs are animals who don't have our level of intelligence, so it's unfair to judge them at human standards.

Just to throw it out there, a lot of rural areas do not have leash laws.

What? Too soon?

I know that, and some dogs are really good at sticking with their owners without a leash. However, this sad situation could have been avoided had the dog been on a leash. But who could have known the man would react the way he did?

Who plays fetch with their dog and keeps them on a leash? Kinda defeats the point.

Shouldn't have been in his yard, obviously. What's done is done, though, sadly. Leash or no leash, the dog was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Yay yuh!!!!!

Does no one understand what it's like to live in the country or a small town? You big city people have no clue on how we live. It's in your yard you can shoot It. End of story.
