Subject: Covenant species in Halo 4

Why are Hunters with the Storm Faction in Halo 4? I don't remember them being mentioned in The Thursday War. I get the similarities between 4 and CE so it make sense gameplay-wise but story-wise, I'm not so sure.

Also, what happened to Drones? Did they just disappear like the prophets and engineers? And what's the status of Arbiter's forces in 2557?

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

The Promethean Crawlers have a similar behaviour to the Drones (on walls, etc), maybe 343i thought it'd be too much?

Sure, gameplay-wise, Drones were never popular but there has to be some explanation for their disappearance. In Halo 2, they seemed to be loyal to Truth. Same in Halo 3.

If you read that story in Halo Evolutions it explains that drones are slaves to the covenant IIRC.

I'd imagine they were set free or escaped on their own after their masters(the Brutes) were defeated

I remembered that too but that was a penal colony, a prison for drones that weren't loyal, or at least that's how I understood it. I assumed it wasn't representative of a whole species.

I am a monument to all your sins

Well, the storm was just being born at the end of the Thursday War. They clearly picked up a lot of momentum in the intervening years, and many hunters likely chose to side with them. As for the Drones? who knows.

  • 12.26.2012 2:50 PM PDT

The Hunters stick around with whoever is giving them access to space travel, and/or who they respect the most. So there are Hunters working with the Storm.

And the Drones were slaves. Either that, or they're just not working alongside the Storm.

  • 12.26.2012 2:57 PM PDT

The drones weren't slaves. The "Penal Colony" was enslaved and put to work because they committed mass murder against their own species. in case you didn't know, it's a prison colony.

  • 12.26.2012 4:35 PM PDT

That's one thing I'm wondering about, based on what has been said I would have thought the Hunters would have stayed with the Arbiter's forces or just went home. They didn't want anything to do with the covenant and only joined under threat that their planet would be glassed.

  • 12.26.2012 6:11 PM PDT

Good riddance to the Drones, never liked them.

  • 12.26.2012 6:18 PM PDT

What a waste....

I imagine it isn't ALL of the hunters. The original idea way back in Halo 2 was to have the Hunters on both sides. They scrapped it because it was too confusing.

We also never saw the Arbiter and co. in Halo 4, so we wouldn't know if they had Hunters or not.

I think they're bodyguards of prominent Elites since they always must be killed to access the next area/they're deployed to guard areas of importance.

What I don't get is where the -blam!- did those Hunters in Spartan Ops come from? I could have sworn the Hunter support for Covies was diminishing (as seen in Halo 3, where there's only like 5 pairs compared to CE and H2's glorious 28+ Hunter pairs).

Oh wait, I get it now. Same way how Jul mustered a fleet within 6 months after his so-called icon has seemingly died...

Instead we get crawlers, which are way more annoying and plentiful.

But... but the Drones were becoming better.

They could finally be headshotted!

I'm pretty sure they took extra damage in the head in the earlier games...

Unless it's an illusion!

Well they did seem weaker in Halo 3...

But then they got shields in ODST!

The Hunters aren't mentioned because 343i didn't seem fit to mention it, and that's pretty much the only source of information Karen Travissty used for writing the whole Trashlands Trilogy...basically she didn't do any kind of proper research at all and thus missed a whole ton of necessary information, like the Hunters being really good buddies with the Elites and pretty much hero-worshipping them.

As for the Arbiter, who knows...except that 343i is continuing to -blam!- up with the whole post-war story in regards to Elites -__- Whatever they do decide to do will most likely be something stupid that doesn't fit with the story.

It wasn't scrapped, there's a difference between not putting something into the game and retconning it/declaring it non-canon. The Hunters still sided with the Elites as well as a large portion of the Grunts. They just weren't included as forces in Halo 3 in order to avoid confusion, they're still there though. Actually, most of the Elites we see in Halo 3 are more like special forces squads or something similar, the whole army isn't being put on the ground to assist, just small squads to assist Chief, as most of the missions in Halo 3 where we have the Elites around they're for the most part small surgical strikes.

You're on the right track. The Drones, as a species, are a hive mind, the ones that were on that penal colony were ones with what would essentially be a mental illness for Drones. They just didn't connect with the hive mind and that led them to do things to butcher their own kind or any other race they came across...so yeah, something like that.

I have the same problem with the Kilo-Five Trilogy. It didn't set up Halo 4 very well which is what it was supposed to do. Between The Thursday War and Halo 4 is about a 3 year gap. It's a cop-out on 343's part to use that as an explanation for things like why Hunter's on the Storm's side. There are a lot of unknowns which to me means they're starting to care less about story.

If the Hunters simply joined the Covenant to avoid being glassed, why are they with the Storm? Did they threaten them in the same way?

Why did the Drones serve the Covenant? How did that come to happen? Did they threaten the hive mind or their queen (or something like it)? Also, where are the UNSC "Loyal" engineers?

  • 12.27.2012 2:27 PM PDT

Fiction has to be plausible. Reality is under no such constraint

its such a pity the story was revamped and all muddled up now....i cant seem to follow it anymore

it just seems to be more show than anything now.

and where did all the new Spartans come from?? i thought they
met there end on reach except 117?

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Easter Egg Hunter. Apprentice Tricker/Glitcher (learning from Grumpy and Sliding Ghost).

Trying to get Waypoint to update Halo 3 stats in detail like here. Now no one can see that my Halo 3 Spartan no longer looks like my Reach Spartan.

Really want to be a Heroic member or have a title. :/

And Plasma Rifles.

OP: I think that they should not have excluded the other species. At least put in Drones or Brutes. I mean seriously, gravity hammer, but no Brutes?

Brutes wouldn't fit because they attacked Sanghelios(Sp?). Apparently, they learned terrorist tricks. An excuse to exclude a less than popular species, if you ask me.

Hunters were like bodyguards for really high ranking Elites. They developed a loyalty to these Elites, since they both had some sort lf warrior culture, and most likely followed them during the Great Schism. Some hunters stayed with the Loyalists because they feared the glassing of their home world. I think that's how they ended up joining the Covenant in the first place.

ANYWAYS, after the Human-Covenant war, I suppose everyone went back to their home worlds for a "break". Then the Elites that joined the Storm realized they needed more troops, so they called in their Hunter buddies.

Jackals... I suppose they are being paid somehow. And Grunts... Well they are probably in a similar situation as the Hunters, except they followed their former Elites commanders out of fear.

Drones were loyal to the Prophets. The Prophets became their "queens" I suppose, and thus they gave them their undying loyalty. I'm not sure how their situation is now since Truth is dead. They may just be minding their business.

Engineers are being thrown around like resources rather than sentient beings. However it's logical that no UNSC engineers would be seen because the player spends so much time on the battlefield. You do NOT want one of those being shot.

Now this is MY view on things, and in no way is it the definitive answer.
