To The Han and Garland

My uncle actually had an idea to make bullet proof shields available in schools in the event of a shooting. Instead of arming all the teachers, provide them with a defense that would nullify the shooters weapon. The shields could be stationed near fire extinguishers or in classrooms and they could be painted to look like school decorations.

Maybe we shouldn't be so quick as to jump onto fighting guns with guns, but diminishing the power with which they hold in a school setting.

But here is a problem with that.

Assuming it's handheld, it may only be rated for pistol rounds, and small ones at that. you start making thicker acrylic glass, you start adding weight.

Bullet Proof glass is not bullet proof. It's bullet resistant, and anything above what it's rated for will penetrate?

Say you put in a shield rated for .223/5.56 and a shooter comes in with a bigger round like 7.62x51 or 30-06. Your .223 rated glass will not stop a .308 or 30-06.

This is true, but I'm sure there are other materials than bullet proof glass to use.

In the case with high caliber rifles, those would probably be difficult to bring into a school considering size.

Pistols on the other hand I'm not too sure. Again, perhaps higher resistance is needed.
The point of the idea is to give the teachers and students some form of defense other than trying to find a hiding place in the school and hoping to survive.

if a teacher had a gun he or she is a BILLION times more tempted to use it than any other object to hurt a student.
Are you really implying that merely having a gun will magically turn someone into a homocidal maniac?

I'd be fine with gun control similar to that in the UK, but that would never happen here. For one there's the "right to bear arms" thing, and there are already too many guns owned by ppl in the US.

1. It should be mandatory to go to a gun training class before purchasing a firearm if it isn't already.

2. It should be mandatory to show proof of purchase/ownership of a type of locker for the guns being purchased. (rife? Some kind of locked cabinet. Hand gun? some kind of locked cased.) before purchasing a firearm.

Thats what I believe should be mandatory if it isn't already in the states that allow firearms. I dont believe that we should ban guns all together. But we should make sure that the people buying them are ready to own a firearm.

I think AR's should be banned but there are plenty out there. There really isn't a problem with guns. There is a problem with bad people and mental people and security.
There is huge misconception about what exactly an "assault rifle" really is.

If we go the definition of semi-auto, then that rules out just about every gun that isn't bolt action or a muzzle loader, including just about every hand gun.

My ruger mini-14 would be considered an assault rifle under this definition, which I find laughable. My Glock 17 would be ruled out as well.

The the public doesn't have access true assault rifles, that is guns that are full auto or burst fire type rifles. That said I'm not so naive or blind to the fact that most guns can be easily converted to burst fire or full auto. For most of us, semi-auto is fine. I'd be happy to have ar-15 that doesn't have full-auto or burst fire capability.

We in United states don't have a gun control problem, in fact we have pretty darn good gun control laws that allow balanced and responsible citizens to enjoy our fire arms.

The problem we have in the United States is a value of life problem.

Of course if we would make mental health care and treatment as available as we do guns, I believe there would be fewer of these tragedies. But the fact remains that if a bad person wants to do bad things they will find a way to do it, regardless of how lax or stringent our gun laws are.

I think there are certainly facets of it that could use refining, but many people seem to have difficulty accepting that the lions share of gun crimes are not the result of legal gun sales.

I'm not well enough informed on the issue to come up with a logical solution. Personally, I wish I could live in a fantasy land without guns or violence, but that's simply absurd and will never happen.

I don't think it would work in the US at the moment.

Big time, this would be a big help when it comes to injury and accidents associated with legal gun-owners.

They are not gonna change the law. Purchasing weapons will be legal forever. Even if 2 people are shot or 50. Only thing we can do is be careful when going out.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

I think most anti-gun people fail to understand what legislation is already in place.

For example, the manufacture of assault rifles for civilian sale was banned in 1986. The only legal way to purchase an assault rifle is to find one that was registered before May 1986, get a tax stamp from the ATF, and wait up to a year to bring it home, after paying well over $10,000.

What they want to ban is just a regular sporting rifle that looks scary.

The person selling the weapon doesn't know the mental state or the intentions of the buyer.
