I think most anti-gun people fail to understand what legislation is already in place.

For example, the manufacture of assault rifles for civilian sale was banned in 1986. The only legal way to purchase an assault rifle is to find one that was registered before May 1986, get a tax stamp from the ATF, and wait up to a year to bring it home, after paying well over $10,000.

What they want to ban is just a regular sporting rifle that looks scary.

Many people are unaware that there is utterly no important difference between a functional ranch rifle for varmits and an horrible and evil assault weapon than the bolt-on plastic and carbon fiber accessories. Both fire the same ammunition at the same rate of fire, one shot per trigger pull.

And so, they tend to (and do) focus on the material (wood is good, black is evil) the attachments (clearly a folding stock, a carry handle, or a flashlight mount are the going to make someone misuse the firearm) and the overall "look and feel" of the arm. The current term and catch-phrase is "military style rifle".

I purchased a Bushmaster AR because I am more familiar and comfortable with the action/function of the rifle, but for me, the use/intent is no different than if I had bought a wooden stocked Ruger Ranch. I target, plink, sport and (haven't yet but would like to) varmit with mine.

Only handguns should be allowed in populated areas. If its the country where there is no one there then it is okay to have any short Of gun but assualt rifles must be semi automatic with only 3 rounds per mag including chamber
Being semi-automatic only and being an assault rifle are mutually exclusive properties. No gun can be both.

This, so many times over. Oh look that gun is black and scary looking clearly it only has one intended use! BTW, that Rugar is identical to mine other than mine has synthetic stock.

There's a lot of Armalite hate going on in this thread (or silly misinformed people who should do some basic research before calling for things to be banned).

I don't like the way modern, big media has played on recent events. They are absolutely sensationalist - so many pundits, on both sides, are the god damn scum of the earth. News tends to spread a ton of misinformation about this subject, and people follow right along.

You can forget trying to control something as pervasive as the firearm culture in the United States. The real focus should be on mental health, awareness, and individual prevention and responsibility.

They already do this. I recently bought a Glock 17. They actually had a lap top set up where I could input my info and it was submitted instantly. I was approved and made the purchase.

Not at gunshows. All you need to do is fill out a simple, one-page, "Transfer of Weapon" form (or something like that) for ATF records. There is no background check done.

Mexico gun laws are basically similar to Japan but they have higher firearm homicide rate. I think it's unfair to compare a country like Japan, which had a very long history of xenophobia which respect in society which was so massively high back then is still now that crime rates in general there are low. Anyone who brings up Japan I have a lot of examples of Central and South America countries who have exactly strict gun control laws.

Also, 8 out of the 10 states with the lowest firearm homicide rates and crime are ranked under 10 out of 100 on the Brady Campaign ranking of state gun control laws (100 being ultra-mega-supreme gun control laws, 0 being Anarchy when it comes to regulation at a state level, California is ranked 80 while states like Utah are the 8th safest state when it comes to gun homicides, New Hampshire has the lowest fire-arm homicide rate in the US and is ranked 6 out of 100).

Most of our issues when it comes to firearm homicides is the drug war. Most gun homicide victims have criminal records which might have been involved in the drug trade or a life of crime, not an innocent Joe.

Not only this, but something has to be done to prevent maniacs from obtaining weapons. Take the guy who set an ambush for firefighters in NY this past week. How in the hell does a guy convicted of murdering his grandmother obtain guns when its obviously he's demented? He even wrote a note saying he wanted to kill. Like c'mon...

Laws against owning guns tend to not deter criminals.

Then something has to be done. It's gotten to the point where there's shootings way too frequently. And don't spout that "gun violence has been done" nonsense. I can point you out to 30+ families in Connecticut who you can try to persuade.

No one needs a weapon that holds 20-30 bullets a clip.

I hate when people use the word "need", "need" is a very strong word which people modify and restrict on their own thoughts. When it comes to it, no one needs more than one round, ARE YOU A BAD SHOT. But who NEEDS guns? You can use different kinds of weapons, but WHO NEEDS them, you can just learn defense, too old or disable, you don't NEED to travel in bad criminal areas, yet again no one NEEDs to NEED any of that, we have to focus on crime instead in a non-violent way, you don't NEED to put your life on line.

What do you suggest then?

Just to put perspective on things, in the USA, people are more likely to be killed by someone's bare hands than they are to be killed with a rifle.

  • 12.26.2012 4:24 PM PDT

Some crazy Politican: "We need to make sure same-sex marriage is outlaw, same with same-sex loving people which should be required to get sent to mental hospitals and camps, same-sex loving people are mentally ill, they produce and spread a wide variety of STDs, they are more criminal in nature even though I have no sources or studies to prove my statement!"
Public: "[i]Oh my god, he's an idiot, he doesn't know anything about same-sex loving people. What another idiot. I can't believe someone who doesn't know what they're talking about is trying to restrict rights and liberties on others.

Some crazy Politician: "[i]We need to ban a abortion. It wrecks a women's -blam!-, a woman can easily stop -blam!- assault sex so no one needs it!
"
Public: "Oh my god, look at this idiot. He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, why should a old white man decide what I should do with my body

Some craxy politican: "We need to ban assault weapons and clips. No one needs a AH-KAH-FO-TEH-SEVEN! They're made for only KILLING people, they're only assault weapons. No one needa a fully semi-automatic weapon with extended clips for durr hunting and self defense[/i'
Public: "[i]Oh, I guess no one needs those dangerous weapons of mass destruction
"

By the way, this whole comment wasn't made to debate about what should be legal or not or what views are right. But just showing how someone who is inexperienced on something they want to restrict would get a way more negative response for making statements above when it comes to political topics; like abortion (Todd Akin, anyone?). The fact there's so many people in the media and politicians doing this is just sad. As a gun owner I can understand people who do truely understand guns and their capabilities want to restrict or ban certain firearms or accessories. But it's down right terrible if you're inexperienced and want to restrict stuff which you know nothing of.
The fact that if you're not a gun owner or interested in firearms that it would be easier to spread anti-gun views to a large amount of the population who are also inexperienced too. If you go back decades, those two examples of abortion and same-sex rights would actually be accepted into society by the public because people were much more inexperienced in those subjects back then.

The Flood is just this awesome :D

Needed, but not so prominent to the point where certain types of guns are banned. In the case of shootings like the one a few weeks ago gun control does not need to be tighter, creating more mental hospitals and better identifying mentally unstable people should be focused on.

  • 12.26.2012 4:31 PM PDT

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

We've got very tight gun control in the UK and very low gun crime.

Makes sense, really.

  • 12.26.2012 4:32 PM PDT

We already have gun control to a certain degree. I couldn't go out right this moment and buy a fully automatic rifle. That's gun control. You have to earn a special license to get one. Gun control =/= banning all guns.

I feel we really needed another one of these threads.

This.

Also, I'm a supporter of the second amendment. Laws only affect those who obey them. If you ban guns, only those who are law-abiding citizens will get rid of their guns. The crazy psychopaths who are planning on shooting up a school.. well, you can bet that they'll easily find access to a gun. In reference to the CT shooting, had those teachers been carrying firearms in their desks, the shooter could have been taken down sooner.

Plus, I'm sure if someone was planning on doing a shooting somewhere, knowing that the people around him were armed, he would probably think twice about doing it.

i disagree with you slightly on this.

i dont think teacher should have guns IN SCHOOL for these reasons:

1) they could go over board with it and use it unnecessarily
2) a student could get a hold of it.

though i do believe they should have a right to leave it in their car.

1) Maybe students should be taught respect?
2) Teachers could just establish a distance bubble and if some kid tries coming up behind them they get smacked in the head. The teacher of course would tell the students to never enter this bubble so it's not random.

I think AR's should be banned but there are plenty out there. There really isn't a problem with guns. There is a problem with bad people and mental people and security.
They already are in 15 states, but are also very expensive. Only 1% of homicides are committed with ARs.
