It is not the US's job to police the world.
(This is coming from an American)

This isn't policing, it's giving aid to nations requesting our help.

Honestly instead of taking care of everyone else s problems why don't we focus on ours. This is just stupid.

From the moment Bob's birth-cord was cut, every girl's hymen has belonged to him.

There must have been a dildo in that Wii control they found
For when they shoved it up his ass, he began to walk around, aaand
Chad Warden the fanboy, was as ABAP as can be
But the -blam!-es say, that he was mad -blam!-, and talked -blam!- on PS3

why do we care about these useless apes?

Soon to be breaking news:

US Coast Guard prepares for massive rescue mission after Iranian fleet sinks off shore. Reports say a small thunderstorm caused most of the ships to simply...fall apart.

What, is it impossible to do both?

Why are we doing this?

Really not a big deal here. This isn't this first time a country has hosted foreign troops with the intention of training excersises to deal with existential threats. It's not like the US is spending unholy sums of money each day for an all out invasion.

Foreign aid accounts for less than 1% of our spending, bro.

Can't the people there take care of themselfs?

Because the past 30 odd years off the people taking care of themselves has worked out so well.

Let's stop throwing away 50 billion dollars every year :)

People that make this claim don't realize the scope of government. Government isn't a person. Nor is it a corporation. It's an entity to vast it can be doing countless things (as it does) every minute.

Oh wait, that isn't how/why our Ambassador to Libya was murdered (along with 3 other Americans). It was because his requests for more security staff were ignored.

That's a pretty big trivialization of the situation. In order to increase security there, they would've had to decrease security elsewhere. Those who had to make the decision did.
The military isn't exactly understaffed...

..or at least have the countries that the US sends troops to aid pay for it...

  • 12.26.2012 3:05 PM PDT

I can't believe nobody has pointed out the source of the article - RUSSIA TODAY, one of the most biased and anti-American/anti-Western news sources out there. There's obvious bias right there.

Also, some of the countries they are going to include places like Algeria, Niger, and Kenya - hardly violent countries. There isn't going to be a massive risk of life in this, nor does the article mention the possibility they are going as military advisers and guards to countries that are completely unrelated to terrorism.

On a side note, the US has been putting their troops in countries across the globe for years. They have troops in South Korea, the Philippines, Japan, Australia, and India (to name just a few)and nobody draws up a fuss. Having them in peaceful African countries that may or may not be at risk of extremism is hardly revolutionary as people make out. Who knows? Perhaps these countries might gain something from it, and may never be anymore Kony's, Genocides, Coups, or Extremist Takeovers. One can wish.

Exactly. It's not like the economy is doing fantastic and we can afford doing stuff like this. Let's cut costs wherever we can.

You have a very naive view of international politics. Most people seem to. Why is the US sending troops to these countries? It's to strangle a possible problem in the future today. A lot of politicking people call "waste" such as foreign aid is used largely to deal with potential issues in their infant stages.

Why is the US and others giving money to Egypt? To prevent problems tomorrow by throwing money at a relatively small issue today.

Except that those countries we currently have troops in, South Korea, Philippines, etc. hold immense strategic value.

Africa? Not so much...

Tell me something I don't know... my point is that they have resources... they should be made to pay something.

That's a grossly wrong assumption.

It sucks pretty bad over there. Extremist groups are getting a solid foothold--better to take care of the problem now before it turns into another Afghanistan.

So essentially you support bribing them to be nice. Good to know. Why should I care about what these people do? Why are we even based in this region or hell any 3rd world nation that we don't do a lot of trade with, to begin with?

They're advisers, not combat roles. Besides, this needs to happen anyway.

That's my point. I don't know why they're there and I don't really care either way, but people jumping around and calling the US "world police", "imperialists", and "facists" because of this (and believe me, there are people saying things like this) need to look and see that the US has always been a peaceful part of many countries and none of them have made a fuss about it. In some cases, those people support the US and actually WANT the presence of the most powerful country in the world.

Because the benefits outweigh the costs to those making this decision. What is the legality of foreign governments hiring the US military is a possible issue. And how thrilled are these governments going to be paying? Will they pay for what the US seems necessary? Maybe they won't go through with it at all?

You have to stop thinking about how it ought to be.
