Why on Earth is tethering not built into iOS in the first place?
Idk but if it isn't allowed there is probably a good reason behind it.
I can't think of a single reason why tethering would be bad for either party.
The iPhone has the capability to tether, but in order to use it you have to pay an extra fee with your provider in order to have it enabled. If you jailbreak or use an app such as this, however, you can by pass these restrictions and tether without any extra charge.
But if you don't have unlimited data, then it will eat up your allotted usage for the month.
Completely forgot about that. Went full potato.
I remember though people getting banned or something from there provider for using jailbreak tethers..
Yea, if they notice an obscene amount of usage it's pretty obvious you're tethering and not paying for it. And it breaks your contract, etc. You really have to be careful when it comes to that stuff. Some of the older jailbreak tethers made it so that it was harder for the carriers to detect this. Idk if they still do that or not.

Oh, just like every other smartphone. I was under the impression the iPhone was designed to not tether from the OP.
Yea, definitely seemed like that and most people think that since it's not really as apparent with the iPhone as it is with most other phones.
