I work for the Department of Defense.
To be fair, having a good score is a really good thing. It makes financial decisions easier and if you look at long term down the road stuff, it certainly won't hurt.
That's not to say there is no Mr or Mrs's right's out there with less than great scores.
Pro tip for you floodians, and this is 100% NOT a joke.
Get a credit card as soon as you can, make small, monthly purchases with it and pay it off on time with a debit card / bank account.
It's just so much better to build early than late. You cannot make it through life without needing a credit score eventually, in some fashion. (yes, that's debatable, but having a good score just helps so much and is so easy to do if you just plan ahead).
