Its already here, sorta.
When Mrs Charlie and I were thinking about doing IVF over adoption, one of the options was to have the eggs screened for sex, certain genetic diseases and such.
Then, by implanting only the eggs with the traits, we could guarantee these things being there, or being absent.
So, if they improve those tests, we are already doing it.
But when will science be able to find out how a baby will look as an adult just by looking at the DNA and genes and sperm and eggs?
We can do this to a limited extent. We know a little about how genes affect our physical and mental traits... so you can just do this a few times and pick out the one that you find most favourable.
The ability to pick and choose traits isn't far off (not far off being a dozen years or more), but most people think it would be unethical to swap out genes with complete abandon. It is more likely that you will be able to choose traits from your natural gene pool.
