You pay for on-disc DLC, so why would you defend having to pay for it again?Well, on the topic of on-disc DLC, that's a simple matter of optimization. Why would you force customers to wait 5 minutes to download your day one DLC and store it on their hard drives when you could just store it on the game disc?
There's plenty of content on discs anyways that you can't normally access, for example, in Halo 4 there is code for two armor abillities that didn't make it into the final game, that while unfinished, are perfectly functional. Does it bother you that you can't access that sort of content without modding? So why is on disc DLC any different?
And as for day one DLC, that's just pure buisness sense. The majority of gamers only play a game for a month before moving on to something new, waiting six months before you start releasing DLC ensures that the majority of your customers will have moved on, unless your game is the sort of game that keeps people around for that period of time (see Skyrim / Halo). If there are people willing to pay for that content while the game is still relevant to them, then what's the problem with making that content availible to them for a price?
Afterall, if the company wants to sell you a particular piece of content, does it matter if they finish it five days before the game comes out or five months after the game comes out? You'll have to pay for it either way, and they can make a larger profit if they sell it earlier rather than later.
Makes perfect buisness sense.
