Subject: "Successful" is a stupid word

What defines success is entirely subjective. A billionaire CEO and a homeless man are equal. They're both humans, and this idea that the CEO is more successful because he has a better reputation or more money is ridiculous.

Does anyone agree?

Well, you don't have to have money to be successful.

I think having billions and a professional career signifies success. However, both the billionaire CEO and homeless person could have the same level of happiness.

There's a “U” and “I” in union but just an “I” in my beliefs

A homeless man isn't successful.

  • 12.26.2012 4:10 PM PDT

You should boycott the word, OP.

Your example of both being equal in terms of being human are correct, but your definition of "success" isn't. Who in the right mind would call the homeless man successful? Of course he's equal to the CEO in terms of natural rights but in terms of success? Not even close.

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

OP can't suck seed.

A homeless man isn't successful.

How isn't he? He could be happy with what he has. He could have a better quality of life than the CEO.

And "success" shouldn't be measured by social status, or even measured at all.

  • 12.26.2012 4:11 PM PDT

I concur that success is subjective, but people are not equal just because they are born -blam!--sapiens. They earn equal rights and opportunities, but they are not equal. Some people are better at things than others.

Besides CEO > bum

"Ignorance is a plague."

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

Nope. There are just different types of success.

Hes homeless. Thats why he isnt successful

Also, The CEO is actually contributing to society. The homeless man is leaching off of society.

"Contributing", my ass. What's with all this recent emphasis on "contributing" to society? No one owes society anything. Everyone is contributing equally just by living.

Stop thinking like a teenager.

If you think society owes you nothing, you need to leave that cave you call your house.

It's a subjectively subjective subject really.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

In the broad humanistic sense, yes, every life has equal value. We are all humans, and as such deserving of life.

But, in a more specific sense, we are our value to the group. This is currently measured by "Success." Be it financial or even political, the most valuable individuals to the group's survival are rewarded. The least are cast aside.

Yes.

Success is one of those words that people think is objective but actually isn't. Success is defined only by the person attempting to or attaining that success. End of.
