What qualities do broke, high school drop-out druggies have that you would consider successful?

They are humans. They don't need a vague notion of "success".
I think you're confusing success with equality in the eyes of the law.

Not everyone is equally successful.

See, I just don't like when people judge others based on who is "successful". It doesn't matter who makes more money or who has a job.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

How can you be successful if you don't have a job? If you don't have a job [and you don't bother to look for one] that means you don't have an income, you can't care for yourself or your family, and you're not giving back to society. I'd consider that far from successful. You're relying on other people to care for you.

That's not success.

I mean, unless your goal was to be unemployed and have other people pick up your slack, then that would be a success.

Success shouldn't even be measured financially, though.

Posted by: Garem
If it's going to be differentiated like that, then "social success" shouldn't exist.

Posted by: Garem
I understand what it is. I'm saying that it shouldn't exist.
Question. You've spent this whole thread claiming things "shouldn't" be and that society "shouldn't" get to decide what success is.

Society is what most people think. So how come you get to say what should be and shouldn't be but nobody else does, not even the vast majority of the population? What makes you special?

Why is this even a serious conversation?

Just sounds like somebody is angry at rich folk.

A jobless person can care for himself and others. And people don't owe an inherent debt to society. I've seen way too many who believe that.

Answer the question.

Why do you get to decide what success is instead of every other person that already agrees on what it is?

  • 12.26.2012 5:58 PM PDT

To be successful means you have met your goal you initially set out to complete. I don't feel that anyone's goal is to become homeless and alone both financially and socially, therefore the homeless are not to be considered successful, in any sense of the word.

Then I guess we need to define success.

What elements does a homeless man have that you would consider successful?

He is a human being. That's all that matters.
So, all human beings are successful?

Yes. We're all equal on a social level.

~yay :D

  • 12.26.2012 5:59 PM PDT

I could only see a homeless person be successful if they were giving up earthly attachments for a spiritual purpose.

Also, society depends on its people to help others. There's a reason we have assistance programs and welfare programs. There's a reason other countries have taxpayer-subsidized healthcare and education. When we all pitch in a little bit, it helps everyone. The "ever man for himself" mentality helps only one person.

I'm your biggest fan!

ITT: A lack of definition of success.

Which isn't possible, because success is different things to different people. If we agree that success is measured by how close the person is to their goal or how happy they are.

In that respect, it's possible that the homeless man could be the more successful but it's also unlikely as, seriously, being a well-respected billionaire kicks a phenomenal amount of ass.

Then he may not be personally successful. That doesn't mean that others can look at him and say, "He's poor. That means he's unsuccessful."

Godshatter: I can go all the way with someone without being attracted to them.
CamCamm: How does that work?
Godshatter: I'm easily aroused by anything that moves. It's a curse.
Brain says 'No, that's ugly', body says 'ugly is fine with me'.

lol op. You not success?

  • 12.26.2012 6:05 PM PDT

So, if you are happy, you are successful?

But happy isn't the exact same thing successful.

If a homeless man and a rich man are both happy, why is successful such a stupid word?

Happiness can be general and broad, but usually when people are successful, they refer to specific goals or challenges that have been reached or overcome.

There's the idea of personal success, and then the BS success that society equates with wealth. Everyone is successful in the BS way. Only some are in the personal way.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

Find what makes you happy, no matter how crazy it may sound to other people, and do it, and love yourself doing it.

That's success.

I agree. I see a lot of people with this "why should I have to give MY money for other people" mentality.
