Subject: Why do so many people hate Gamestop?

For those who are wondering what that great wall of China is doing up there? Don't worry, I'll defuse it real quick.

- Their staff are not always fans of video games.

Going to need some facts with that. Not another bloody long story, quick and to the point please.

- They are often the only video game store/chain in a given area, and all the stores stock pretty much the same thing.

Pretty good for their business don't you think? As far is their stock is concerned, yep, should be because *snort* they're the same company. Next point.

- That which they do stock is far from compelling or comprehensive (no old (64, SNES, PS1,etc.) games/systems, no rare games, no foreign games).

Yep, that's not good for business. If you want the nostalgic stuff, order online. There's a reason why the internet is there. Next point.

- They are always trying to sell you more: Pre-orders, the new smash hit, memberships, strategy guides. And the way they do it is aggressive and uncomfortable.

Again, the point of commercialism. I go to the same store for a whole year now. The guys know I have a sub and always pre-order. They ask everytime. I don't hold it against them because that's their job. That and I do sometimes forget I want to put some money down.

(God this is fun)

- Developers make content EXCLUSIVELY for their patrons, since Gamestop, because of their saturation, has such high sales. This is pretty much the worst thing ever, when you have fans who are upset about lack of DLC or updates, yet development time went into making a GS exclusive.

Let's look at Halo 4. Exclusives all around. Sales went all over the place. Granted, not good for them, but regardless, not their problem. Got an issue with that? Blame the developer.

- Their return/buyback policy approaches Pawnstar levels of rip off.

Wrong. Once you open it, it's yours. That's a fact with ANY store. You go try to return an open copy of BlOps2. Guaranteed they will either exchange it or tell you to GTFO. As far as their trade in program is concerned, if you're that concerned and that annoyed by it, go sell it online. Good luck trying to get full face value for it though.

- They just throw inventory out (check a Gamestop dumpster sometime).

The only time inventory is "thrown out" is when it's worthless and cost ineffective to send it back to corporate for destruction. And at WORST that's when they zero out the guides. And maybe some of the small items at the front of the counter. Pretty much it. Everything else is shipped out.

- Their uniforms are dorky.

Really? They wear game shirts supporting the products they sell. See nothing wrong with that. Evidence: NASCAR.

Not really a sturdy argument you have there mate. And as far as your story is concerned, your fault you didn't request to have it tested/checked. You have that right.

Please do not send me group invites.

Because I've never been to one [outside of release night] that sells games in sealed cases. They're all opened cases and you get the disc from behind the counter. In the cd/dvd/movie/software industry, anything that has a broken seal is deemed "used".

You're paying new price for used game.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I think it is because the prices at which they buy used games are horribly low.
Personally, I haven't had any problems with them though.

I am such an avid hater of Gamestop.

Some generalizations:

- Their staff are not always fans of video games.
- They are often the only video game store/chain in a given area, and all the stores stock pretty much the same thing.
- That which they do stock is far from compelling or comprehensive (no old (64, SNES, PS1,etc.) games/systems, no rare games, no foreign games).
- They are always trying to sell you more: Pre-orders, the new smash hit, memberships, strategy guides. And the way they do it is aggressive and uncomfortable.
- Developers make content EXCLUSIVELY for their patrons, since Gamestop, because of their saturation, has such high sales. This is pretty much the worst thing ever, when you have fans who are upset about lack of DLC or updates, yet development time went into making a GS exclusive.
- Their return/buyback policy approaches Pawnstar levels of rip off.
- They just throw inventory out (check a Gamestop dumpster sometime).
- Their uniforms are dorky.

Now for an anecdote:

A few weeks ago, I went to buy a used, refurbished xbox 360 for Halo 4. I asked specifically, "Will I be able to play this game tonight?" They assured me that I would be fine. I bought controllers and everything.
After they are ring me up, the employee said, "Alright, and here is your rewards card, let me show you how to set up your account." I am not kidding, the guy actually charged me for a membership card without asking, and I did not even realize it had cost me anything until I got home. I am 99% sure that is illegal.
So, I get home. Out of the box, the 360 red rings. I call them (there is no way I can get back there before they close, and even though I live in a major metropolitan area, they are still the only chain that is anywhere near where I work), and the guy says "huh, it was in a green box, that should mean it was tested!" Well. I guess it wasn't.
I go back the next morning, lugging this doorstop of a console with me, and they trade it out and test it no problem (that part was admittedly stress free), and I hit the road. When I get home, guess what I cannot play because I do not have the hard drive space to download the multiplayer disc???? These people assured me that I would be able to play outright, this one game, and they were ignorant of the reality of the situation.

This whole event showed me 3 things:

1) Their guarantees do not hold water.
2) They are unscrupulous.
3) They do not know the products they are selling.

I have been buying the occasional game from Gamestop for almost ten years. In my hometown, there are thankfully some great alternative stores, and I use them. In the last 4 years of me living in this city, I have not had ONE positive experience at a Gamestop.

That sounds like something that would only happen to a couple of stores at most, certainly not the whole chain.

I have no problems with my local gamestop.

Their commericals are dumb, and I usually don't like their employees.

They get such a bad rep because most of their employees may know next to nothing about video games but sell them. The fact that you trade games in for next to nothing but they'll hike the price up for 30 bucks when you got 5. They're a business.

Here's what happened at my interview.. I put on the application form that I could take apart a 360 and then put it back together again. I walk into the office.. manager has a 360 on the table. First thing he wants to see if I was full of -blam!-. I took it apart. Put it back together. It worked fine. Wires taken out and everything. I STILL didn't get the job. Oh well.

Try asking! The blood can be turned off, there's no swearing and it only has partial nudity (and even then, it's one person halfway through the game). It's a great game and for the price, it's even better! (already clocked in 30+ hours!)

relevant

Its not the employees fault, its the gamestop head office. They make it a requirement for employees to remind you about special offers or pre orders for upcoming titles.

The nuts in charge actually think people like to be continually reminded about new games.

You know 20 bucks for a new Dark Souls is the list retail price right?

GameStop isn't a good deal, they claim to be but they aren't. Just shop around.

  • 12.26.2012 6:38 PM PDT

What a waste....

Steam has deals where you can buy $60 games for $5.

I know, the deal was referring to the older games they have. A buddy of mine got GH2 there for $2 earlier today and brink was $5!

Not at all. Had a ton of fun debunking his complaints. :)

  • 12.26.2012 6:40 PM PDT

Because people want what they paid when they trade in games because they're still on sale new for $60. Your game is not new. At most they can sell it for 30-40 dollars. Getting 20 for that is pretty good.

  • 12.26.2012 6:42 PM PDT

Take me into your heart! Accept me as your savior! Nail me to the -blam!- cross, and let me be reborn!

I used to trade in my games there all the time, but hated it because the values would be dirt so I don't trade in anymore. Other than that, I don't have any problems. The local EB Games staff knows their -blam!- about games, and they're friendly and know me as a regular.

I wouldn't know, I've never been to one as they don't have them here in Britain. But I heard they give jack all when it comes to trade ins.

Pretty much. I realize they have to make a profit, but giving you $20 (in credit, probably more like $2 cash) for a game they are going to sell for $50 is a bit of a stretch. Still, it is nice to be able to trade in games at all rather than having them sitting around taking up space. At least you get something back.

Their employees also tend to be quite unprofessional at times. And their online download services could use some work.

Other than that though, I think they are a pretty good business.

Truthfully where I live they have pretty good employees.

I find that hard to believe. They usually give $30 or above.

  • 12.26.2012 6:45 PM PDT

You, I don't like you.

They employ people who don't know that much about video games, their trade in prices are usually a rip-off, they push memberships and other products at the counter, and their third party controllers are third rate.

Tell them to give you a sealed copy, then. The one I go to keeps sealed copies behind the counter and keeps used games in a drawer.
