Unto the Fray we go

I know I know multiple endings has been done to death. However when used right it can be a really good design choice as it shows what has happened because of your actions, plus it adds re-playability somewhat, so don't expect it to die soon.

Anyway, I once read that the voice actor for Master chief, Steve Downes, said he wanted Master Chief to die a hero's death.

(SPOILER ALERT)

However, with Sgt. Johnson and Cortana now dead, some people, like me, really don't want chief to die.

So why not make 2 possible endings for the last Halo game Here's two possibilities.

- In one, Chief Survives his final battle and after recovery, he decides to retire from military service. After the credits, Chief is interviewed about his actions during the Halo games.

- In the other, Chief sacrifices himself to defeat the final boss of the last Halo game. After the credits a somber memorial is held.

So what do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

Ehh... no thanks. Wouldn't suit Halo.

Master Chief dies at the end. He's gone rogue and the Arbiter/Noble 7 have to put him down.

He hasn't gone ANCIENT EVIL, merely rogue from age and trauma leading to a bitter end.

You know, this merits a thread...

1: activate halo array, master chief takes control of all forerunner a.i.'s

2: activate halo array, instantly infuse spartan / forerunner / flood dna into every sentient being in the galaxy.

3: activate the halo array, instantly kill the flood and all other non-human races

Cortana takes the form of a little girl. She offers the Chief three options:

He can destroy the Forerunners.
He can control the Forerunners.
Or he can merge humanity with the Forerunners.

His decision will release a burst of energy colored red, blue, or green, respectively.

So long as they aren't planning to make any more games after that, sure.

Multiple ending games screw up sequels, either by forcing the sequel to blatantly ignore some of the choices you made, or by forcing the sequel to ret-con the big decision you made so it seems ultimately trivial. Either way, you feel as though the call you made in the previous game wasn't important, and when you pull the same stunt again in the current game, it won't feel nearly as important either because you know they'll just screw it over with the next game.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

It would be better for it to end with some closure and finality.

Eg.
Chief is dead. Get over it. or Chief lives happily ever after.

Not both depending on X + Y + Z factors during the game. Also Red, Blue or Green?

It would just make the ending taste bitter imo.

That why I said for the Final Halo game. To ensure that does not happen unless Micro$oft goes all EA.

How about being determined by the final battle? If Chief is alive, you get the Happily ever after ending, if he dies, you get the He's dead get over it ending.

That leaves the ending to the story ambiguous, If I ask anyone 'How did Halo 3 end?' I'd get the answer 'Chief in Cryo, people think he is dead'

If I ask the same question but for a multiple ending game like ME3 I would get 'badly' or 'Umm depends'

I think it would be better if the story had a decisive conclusion much like LOTR or Star Wars. So everyone knows the proper ending to it and can discuss that.

He threw down a glove you made the mistake
Of picking it up now you're gone
The choosing of guns or fighting with swords
The choice of weapons is done
He'll tear you apart as soon as you start
You know you don't have a chance.

I see where you're going. I really just want to prevent a few flame wars and trying to satisfy more people.

Lets say in the end chief is alive and he retires, how can we provide closure and finality to that? How about Chief donating his armor to a museum? but then again he could always ask for it back for fighting again, so that's not a good example.

  • 12.26.2012 5:51 PM PDT

If the Chief ends up like Noble 6, with his helmet thrown in the ground and a lame voice-over saying how much he sacrificed, I will be disappointed.

I do believe he will die, but I think his death should allow for his body to be buried. Not some lame nuclear explosion that leaves thing up for interpretation.
