Ok, I see a lot of confusion in the flood about what an Assault Weapon is, how it relates to Assault Rifles, and where that leaves the average joe.
Ok, lets start.
Definition of an Assault Rifle: A chambered in an intermediate cartridge, capable of accepting a detachable box magazine with the ability to engage targets at 300 meters using semiautomatic or automatic fire.
Now lets define Automatic: Automatic fire is the ability to pull and hold a trigger on a firearm and let loose continuous fire.
Now Semiautomatic: Semiautomatic fire is the ability to pull the trigger and hold it yet still only fire one round per trigger pull.
Now what is an 'Assault Weapon'? As per California law, an Assault weapon is any semi-auto center fire rifle that has one or all of the following features as well as the ability to accept a detachable magazine:
Collapsible stock
Bayonet Lug
Conspicuously protruding pistol grip
Flash suppressor
Grenade or Flare launcher
Forward Pistol grip
Now what does that all mean? Well the best way to explain it is to show you in pictures.
Assault Weapon. Note the stock, pistol grip, bayonet lug, and flash hider. This is clearly an assault weapon. It is a felony in California to attach a magazine greater than 10 rounds.
Now lets look at what isn't an assault weapon.
Not an assault weapon. It has a flush pistol grip, no bayonet lug, a fixed stock, and a pinned flash hider. It is legal in California to have a magazine greater than 10 rounds.
Not an assault weapon It has a device which prevents the magazine from being removed, thus making it not an assault weapon.
Not an Assault Weapon Ruger Mini 14
Assault Weapon Also a Ruger mini 14. Same function as the one above, but because of it's features, it is an assault weapon.
Not an Assault Weapon Springfield Arms M1A
Assault Weapon Springfield Arms M1A. Same action as above, but different cosmetic features thus making it an assault weapon.
The point I am trying to make is that the term Assault Weapon does nothing but indicates the features on the firearm and not the function it's self.
Assault Weapon was a term coined to try and stigmatize semiautomatic firearms. Wiki article on the term "Assault Weapon." All the term does is single out rifles based on aesthetics and not function. Functionally an AR-15 is no different than your granddad's semiautomatic hunting rifle, just less powerful.
The AR-15 Platform (AR standing for Armalite and not Assault Rifle) fires a .223 caliber bullet. Which is substantially less than most other semiautomatic hunting rifles which fire heavy hunting rounds like .308, 30-06, .300 win mag, 7mm rem, and other 30 caliber bullets. It has much less power than all of those rounds I listed, yet it is constantly called a high powered rifle when it really isn't.
Now to buff out one last misconception fully. The AR is AR-15 does not stand for "Assault Rifle." It sands for Armalite, the original creators of the AR-15 platform. Armalite produced many different type of Firearms. Such as the AR-7 wich is a semi-auto .22 rifle that could be broken down and stored in it's own stock. Armalite also produced the AR-17 which is a semiautomatic hunting shotgun[/url]. So no, none of these are "Assault Rifles" They are the ARmalite Series.
Hope I lifted some of the confusion.
