Then is a piston with an extended barrel, a forward grip, and a stock considered an assault weapon?

Or the saiga-12,spas-15? Or other semi-auto shotguns?

I'm 99.9% sure there will never be a "gun grab". Australia did it, but obviously they had to pay for them since they are confiscating property bought legally. There are just waaaayyyy too many in the US for that to be economically feasible. And making you a felon for owning one overnight won't work either. That violates ex post facto law. Thanks for the thread BTW
They only got 30% of the guns turned in.

Good job OP.

In the federal assault weapons ban, I know some shotguns like the spas-12 was considered an assault weapon.

Read for yourself.

I find it interesting that my brother could, with a few screwdrivers, turn his mini-14 into a fully automatic weapon, yet it isn't banned.

Actually, that is very illegal and he could go to federal prison if the ATF caught him. Possession of an unregistered automatic weapon is a felony.
I mean that the mini-14 as a semi-automatic weapon isn't banned, when it can easily be made more deadly.

Well a lot of semi-autos can. I believe in the AR-15 there is simply a small plate missing that prevents it from going full auto. There have been a few cases where AR-15s had a part break and the rifle then shot in burst fire.

I know shotguns follow similar limits as rifles, pistols I'm not sure about.

Because a piston with a stock can technically be considered a rifle.

Under the California ban, pump actions are not considered assault weapons.

Semiautomatic shotguns however, are.

And shotguns with revolving magazines are downright banned and no amount of work will change that. Thus us Californians will never see the Taurus Judge.

Pistols with vertical forward grips are federally banned. Though there is confusion about the Magpul Angled Front Grip since it's not a vertical pistol grip.

I'm fairly sure cartridge size matters more than weapons size in classifying it.

I saw "saiga" as an assault weapon.

And I'm an idiot in law language, so i quit hurting my brain over that.

Not true, it's how you file your 4473 with the ATF.

If you have a rifle with an overall length of less than 16 inches, you have two choices. Choice A, pay your 200 dollar tax stamp and register it as a Short Barrel rifle or B. Register it as a pistol and remove the stock.

pistol

Same cartridge, different classification.

A rifle can fire any cartridge, if it is built to accept. One can build a rifle that fires a .22 short, or a .60 caliber round. On e can also build pistols that fire the same sized cartridges.

It may have an internal flash suppressor for all we know, and a detachable magazine.

Assault rifle = military style.

The AR-15 saw action all over the world, including in Operation Gothic Serpent, and was used by Delta Force and the US Army Rangers.

Your grandpa's old hunting rifle never saw that kind of action.

That is how I define an assault rifle.

And yes, part of it IS because of how it looks. Why? Because people buy fancy looking guns to scare and offend people who don't like guns. Fear doesn't belong in neighborhoods.

Factually incorrect. The AR-15 never saw action, except maybe with the Malaysian army in the 50's when they placed a small order.

The M-16 that was built by Colt did see action from Vietnam to Panama, Granada, as well as Gothic Serpent, and Gulf War I and II.

Grandpa's old hunting rifle could very well be the M1 Garand he was issued in World War II. Yet that isn't an Assault Weapon, is it?

Do you know why people build scary looking AR-15s? To poke fun of the people who hate them so much.

There is no difference between a Tacticool AR-15 and a Hunting Rifle

Aesthetics is no reason to ban something.

The M1 isn't an assault rifle in my book, because it shoots 8 shots then makes a loud PANG noise. The AR-15 can shoot 30 shots.

It can also shoot 5 shots, 10 shots, 20 shots, 50, 60, and a hundred? So can a Ruger 10/22, what is your point?

  • 12.26.2012 7:35 PM PDT

Key

If you don't need something for hunting or self defense or sport, you should not be allowed to have it. The amount of bullets a gun can shoot before you reload (whether that's a clip, a magazine, what have you) should be limited to about 10. If you're hunting, and you fire off 10 rounds, you either hit or did not hit whatever you were trying to hit. If you didn't hit it, it's probably run off. If you did hit it, good job. Either way, it's time for you to reload. This would limit the amount of damage any given gunman would be able to do to a crowd of people (as that's the point of gun restrictions: to help with gun crime).

If that restriction alone is put in place, along with restrictions to people who have people with mental illnesses living in their home and/or on the mentally ill themselves (determined via a federally-regulated test), I think the violent gun crime rate would go down drastically. Or, at the very least, the amount of people killed in the incidents could go down. Everything else (collapsable stock, pistol grip, scope, etc.) don't actually assist someone in the killing of another human unless they've got a sniper rifle in which case holy -blam!- how the -blam!- did that man get a sniper rifle remove that man's sniper rifle.

TL;DR: "Assault Weapon" criteria are dumb. Amount of bullets in a magazine/clip/gun is a legitimate argument to have though.
