Subject: Unusually dark moments in lighthearted games

There just aren't enough moments in the day to rectify the wrongs of the past.

Name a time when you were playing a game that wasn't known for its violent graphics or harsh language, then suddenly you find a part in the game that's unusually dark and brutal for what rating the game has. It can be something creepy, or just disturbing.

My instance is for the game Riviera The Promised Land when at the beginning of the story, one of the characters says "You're lucky it was someone else that found you, and not me. If it was me, i'd keep you all to myself, locked up somewhere nice and safe."

And that was with an NPC that isn't an enemy.

Yup, that'll be my number 3 for the time being. Just a "Wow did i just shank him in the head?"

Not necessarily dark, but the haunted mansion in Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines took me by surprise.

I can't really think of a dark moment in a lighthearted game. I keep thinking of games like Conker, but I can't think of any moments like that.

There's a part in Persona 4 where your friends and you consider murdering the serial killer you find. It's kind of dark considering you're all high-schoolers in the game.

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

I suppose Fable: The Lost Chapters is a fairly lighthearted game. The start of that is quite brutal in comparison, where your village gets burned down and everyone but you is killed.

Kingdom Hearts, when Riku stabs Maleficent with the dark Keyblade. Looked pretty damn painful for a game that has the protagonist kick ass with a key.

Rain, and Jazz.

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Majoras Mask and Pokemon had a few moments where it turned unexpectedly dark, but it sort of played into something larger and doesn't quite fit.

I know I've played games with the exact thing OP is talking about, but I simply can't recall them.

When that guy at the campfire laughed at me for being cursed it got to me (Dark Souls). He didn't have to be that mean.

If you're talking about the Crestfallen Knight, I killed him for his meanness.

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

Majora's Mask had some really dark moments:
The zombified old man in the closet
The begining
The pain of wearing the masks

Gotta admit that the part in Halo 4 where the Composer composes everyone on the Research Station except Chief creeped the Hell out of me, since Halo has always been arguably the most tame M-rated game out there.

Which one?

OT: Resident Evil 5. I liked the game -it usually wasn't scary enough- until that one part where your friend dies.
