I believe it as much as anyone should believe a SCIENTIFIC theory*.

*Noticed how I said Scientific with the Theory. The last time I just typed theory thinking everyone would know what I mean and The Flood went full retard and attacked me. You guys are really immature.

Halo: CE Anniversary Achievement Idea
C-C-C-CANNON BREAKER!
Let Sgt. Johnson die on Halo.

I'm not sure if this is considered a political thread or not. It may spark some controversy.

On topic, I believe it exists to a point. I like to believe that science and religion can work together. I'm not convinced we used to be walking fish, but I definitely believe we slowly evolve to survive better in the wild.

+1 for you good sir.

You are the same person you were ten years ago. Mentally at least. Unless you want to get into the whole "your cells replace themselves every ten years" thing, then yeah, you're not the same person physically.

Evolution happens over the course of generations and how a species changes to adapt to a foreign environment.

13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

Sufficient evidence has been gathered to deem evolution a superbly obvious truth regarding the development and history of life on this planet. No other logical alternative has presented itself, and it is widely accepted as fact by the scientific community, whom I would wisely entrust above all else when it comes to determining whether or not a proposition is true.

  • 12.26.2012 9:38 PM PDT

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

It's not something to believe in, either you accept facts or stay ignorant. That's as blunt as it gets, I'm sorry.

"Ignorance is a plague."

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

I believe in the theory as a concept. Yes, animals do change over time. You aren't the same as you were 10 years ago, are you?
There is evidence of it.. But I'm not so sure I believe that every animal we have on the planet evolved from the microbe crawling out of the ocean.
Evolution does not act on individuals in a population over the course of a lifetime.

Individuals are selected; populations evolve.

It's not a question of whether or not I believe in evolution. Asking someone if he believes in evolution is equivalent to asking him if he believes in gravity. You either accept scientific fact or you don't. Belief doesn't factor in.

Maybe someone could shed some light on the subject since I'm not very knowledgeable. If Evolution is the process of a Species changing to fit into a new environment, if the environment is to harsh, wouldn't the species just die out before the change in the species can take place?

EDIT @ Harlow: It's not entirely a fact, it's a mix between Fact and Theory*.

*I have to keep putting that damn asterisk there to make sure people know that I mean Scientific Theory when I say just Theory.

Yes, that's called "Extinction."

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

Yes, that's called "Extinction."
And it happens to 99.9999% of all species.

  • 12.26.2012 9:43 PM PDT

So how can Evolution work if the species just dies out before Evolution can take place? Or does it just work if the species has a chance at surviving even without Evolution?

Idk, i'm just throwing out what I believe it to be. The only Biology class I took was 2 years ago.

Either way, I think a population could thrive and evolve as such when they are able to sustain the population.
Ex. Access to plenty of food and water.

Yes, that's called "Extinction."

...What?

You're assuming that every instance of an environmental change is lethal to a species. That's not the case. Natural selection gradually picks out those best fitted to a new environment if a new environment presents itself.

Apes didn't turn into humans.

Humans and Apes have a common ancestor.

We've uncovered a plethora of intermediate fossils that branch that common ancestor and humans.

  • 12.26.2012 9:48 PM PDT

Well no, I'm not saying every environment is lethal, but if the environment poses a risk to the species would Evolution not work in that case? Does Evolution only work if the environment in not a danger to the species?
