Subject: Why is modding so bad?

I was on wondering why is treated so harshly for how little it actually affects anyone.
Why not allow people on Minecraft, Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout, etc, to use mods that make the game more enjoyable like MoCreatures and several texture packs to place there mods/texture packs on a Dashboard file share? If it is not hurting anyone, why ban it?
I understand banning mods such as Aim bot and such, but honestly, these other mods would be great

it interferes with the developer's ability to rake in profit. if someone makes a mod that adds a lot of new features to a game people will be tempted to play that instead of a sequel.

  • 12.27.2012 1:04 AM PDT

I have a feeling this is going to end badly.

no, many games are made to prevent modding of any sort and a lot of times it is illegal to distribute modded material without a licence.

Talking about Sweden is an ultrabannable offense.

Too bad being completely and utterly wrong isn't a bannable offense.

Devs don't like it when people make better games than they do, using their engine.

Also, it infringes on copyright or whatever, like how remixing a song infringes on copyright.

You can. You just can't use that console to access the online network for that console when you do.

So if you do it on the playstation, you can't use that console to access the Playstation Network anymore. Likewise, if you do it with a 360 you can't access Xbox Live any more. You can do it to your hearts content provided you keep it offline.

Neither are you. A popular mod would only boost the sales of the game it was modded from.

But it doesn't infringe any copyright... Under the Fair Use Doctrine

Just like how you can remix a song... and the artist can't do anything about it.

A real test of a man is if he is willing to scrape a sharpened razor up and down his junk just to please a woman.

Because that would potentially involve fewer $15 map packs and day one, on disk DLC, so said the fat little boy who was having trouble holding all his sweets and toys.

Lol, idiot. DOTA and DayZ don't actually exist. They're fairy takes made up from the hat suckling Valve and PC fanboys. Now, get on your knees and take it from Microsoft again like a good girl.

You better close this sig when your done.

PC version of Skyrim is so much better than the console version for this very reason. I've spent most of the night installing mods that enhance the game and my character. It's so much fun!

... until they make a sequel and no one buys it because the mod beats it. Not worth the extra few dollars right now, opportunity cost is too great. Also I might add that most popular mods originate from popular games in the first place (CS from Half Life, Dota from WC3). So they aren't going to sell much more than they already are.

If a person likes the original game that spawns a mod, that brings in more people interested in BOTH properties. They'll buy freaking both if they're good.

That's just... What you just wrote makes no sense. When has your scenerio EVER happened? You don't have to believe everything EA spouts out, you know.

If that was true, Neither Oblivion nor Skyrim would have any PC sales

Honestly, this must be a joke. Child, listen, stop trying to defend yourself because clearly you are incapable of it. The only idiot in this thread is yourself, and trust me, it is obvious. So, how about you do as I asked earlier and log off, mommy and daddy wouldn't want you staying up this late.

Those poor poor professionals having to compete with fans to make money.

The solution is to make something worth spending money on, I avoid new games when they're not interesting, not because I'm playing something else.
