If that was true, Neither Oblivion nor Skyrim would have any PC sales

Explain.

For example, I, along with any self respecting PC gamer, buy bethesda games on PC simply FOR the mod support.

If a game doesn't have mod support, its not worth my time.

Talking about Sweden is an ultrabannable offense.

Too bad being completely and utterly wrong isn't a bannable offense.

Devs don't like it when people make better games than they do, using their engine.

Also, it infringes on copyright or whatever, like how remixing a song infringes on copyright.

But it doesn't infringe any copyright... Under the Fair Use Doctrine

Just like how you can remix a song... and the artist can't do anything about it.
Except that remixed music gets taken off youtube due to copyright infringement all the time.

wait you can't mod Skyrim? I thought pc skyrim had lots of mods. I am confused.

Currently studying Computer Science & Software engineering. Hope to work on mobile devices of the future! When a certain game's credits roll, look out for my name! ;)

You will -blam!- bricks when you see what game it is! =)

True developers praise the modding community. Take example of John Carmack. He release the source code of an engine! Now that is what the devs hsould be doing!

If the modders are good enough, they have a high chance of actually getting a job with the developer (depending on how popular their mod was).

Valve tends to do that.

Which is great, dont you think? You demonstrate your skill and you get a job out of it. Beautiful. I absolutely cannot stand devs who deny their modding fanbase (most likely because their flagship platforms are consoles rather than computers), but that doesnt mean that you have to bash them. All they are doind is using their creativity to make something new hence increasing the popularity of whatever game is underneath it all. Early id SOftware games are a good example, Doom was a single game and look at how many mods there have been? There are still mods being uploaded on the ftps even to this day! Thats just fantastic!

Without mods we wound't have TF2, or Counter Strike, or CTF.
Im sure there are other great things to come from modding that Ive missed.

Exactly! All are the grand-children of id Tech 1! See people? Modding is as powerful as developing.

Muffins are just ugly cupcakes

One of the purposes of consoles is it provide an even playing ground. Allowing mod support for consoles without disturbing multiplayer games would be tricky.

On the PC, many game developers support mods for their single-player games.

As I already stated, modding is fine on a console as long as you do not try and use the modded console online. You can mod single player games as much as you want on a console. It's just usually a bit more difficult as it involves hardware modification as well as software.

it interferes with the developer's ability to rake in profit. if someone makes a mod that adds a lot of new features to a game people will be tempted to play that instead of a sequel.

And / or DLC

Morrowind had some really, really incredible mods, yet the next games in the series still had great sales too. I'm pretty sure that's what the other poster there was referring to.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with modding single-player games or in ways that don't give you an advantage over other players in multiplayer games. I think they get a little wary of modding more so because of how easily someone can sneak a virus or spyware into an untested mod and get people to download and install it. Even though that's not really the dev's or publisher's problem, it can make their game look bad.

[As of October 2012]
2013 ADFA Officer Cadet of the RAAF (Aerospace Engineer Electronics Officer).

There's 2 types of issues:

1. For modding that involves the editing of multiplayer, it can easily lead to "hacking" and all sorts of drama that ruins multiplayer.

2. For single player (Minecraft, Skyrim, etc) there is no issue, and the developers are fine with it. However, it cannot be supported on console, because it would require a new architecture, that allows mods of all sorts to be installed, but whilst protecting the console user.

You could have people test / screen the mods, and only make the good ones available, but then you're paying for people to test mods, and for what profit? Sure you get some for people buying the game for the mod capabilities, but they're a minority, and often buy the game late after release, sometimes via pre-owned games.

You don't get banned for modding the PC version. It's moderated on XBL so you can't go crying to Xbox if you break your box.
