The hacker has been emailing me, from the few messages he sent he made it clear these attacks were personal and that he either knows me personally or was put on me by someone that knows me.

Apparently i pissed off one of his friends and hes going to -blam!- my life up because i -blam!- one of his friends. He also mentioned i go to uni with this "friend".

Police are now involved, i just hope they can actually do something, the only info i have is the guys email address. Theres only one person that matches the scenario, this one guy i was friends with and used to go uni with, he cut contact with me after i told him he was being a dick to one of our mutual friends.

My steam account just got hacked and my credit card was linked to it. The hacker bastard purchased over $700 worth of content and gifted it over to a different account. This bastard then sends me emails taunting me as he got my name and full address.

I just spent 4 hours changing all my passwords and reformatting my pc and talking with my bank to have the transactions refunded and my card cancelled.

Not only did my bank fail me in not noticing the suspicious spending of over $700 in one go, but steam also somehow let this no gooder into my account. Once a credit cards linked, all you have to do to make a purchase is click one button, theres no extra security features like sms codes or confirmation calls.

So what you're saying is don't link your credit card to anything?

What do steam care? They're getting money so don't care one bit if someone hacked you.

  • 12.27.2012 9:27 AM PDT

Link or it didn't happen.

Why don't you have extra security linked to your card and not your Steam account? Don't blame Steam for your incompetence.

  • 12.27.2012 9:27 AM PDT

OP, don't give your password/ID/Email to anybody in regards to a service. I have a Steam account as well and they have some tight-ass security when it comes to checking in from a new computer. That should be your lesson. I hope you learn from this experience, moron.

Edit: Clearly OP gave out his information a while back to SOMEONE.

By his logic, yes.

  • 12.27.2012 9:28 AM PDT

Every time you make a purchase you have to re enter the 3 digit security code. Did he hack your account and use that or did he actually obtain all of your card info.

1. You dont need to re enter the 3 digit security code at all once its linked.

2. I never gave out my details to anyone.

3. I never even got an email saying someone has logged in from a different computer.

If you truly got hacked, tell gabe about his indestructible security being breached.

Otherwise, think how someone could have gotten your info.

  • 12.27.2012 9:30 AM PDT

The following is needed to hack your steam account.

- Steam ID
- Your own E-mail and password information

Someone's been snooping around your email.

Using credit cards is actually generally better. It's easy to get the charges refunded on your account like OP did.

Like someone else said, your e-mail was most likely hacked as well. Then used to recover the steam account. My guess would be you had a keylogger on your computer, good thing you already reformatted.

Amex offers fraud protection. So if you're hacked, or the card is lost or stolen, you aren't responsible for the charges.

Well if he gifted to another account, than steam has records, and can get his address, and have him prosecuted in his home country for theft.
