I wish he didnt talk that much again. It helped the player to actually feel like he is the chief.

I do not want to stop asking. I do not ask to stop wanting.

I'll have to address this in my analysis of the story.

He spouts pointless inferred diologe in Halo 4. I'd rather him not speak at all.
This.

OT: 343 doesn't fully understands the Chiefs character.

And what makes you, or anyone here who has had no experience working on the Halo series, so informed and understanding about John as a character?

Oh yeah, nothing... It's nothing but arrogant pub gossip.
To be honest, I probably know more about the Halo series from just playing it than most people at 343. Do you really think they care that much about Halo? No. They are just hired to work on the game and sell copies. Don't try to tell me that crap that "Oh mai gawd everybody who works at 343 is a Halo fan and wants to make Halozzz!" That's just a lie they tell you to trust them.

Ew, my username. :C

I came up with it when I was 10.

And I hate both equally.

Him talking a lot on halo 4 just felt weird. He's a spartan 2 he has no feelings just wants to do what he's told.

He's better off a mute. Feels like he's a child that needs to be told everything.

If you don't elaborate on how he "felt like a child", I'm gonna assume you're a blind Halo 4 hater.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I think the thing was whenever Chief spoke in Halos 1-3, it was always short dialogue and it was usually very profound, witty, bad ass, or all 3.

"I need a weapon", "You're on", etc all those were simple but are the most memorable quotes of the franchise. The only cool thing Chief said in halo 4 was "no sir" but the captain guy was being such an over the top jerk it ruined the quote.

Not really. If I remember correctly some of the SPARTANs in Fall Of Reach had a sense of character. Failing that, Kurt (was it?) from Ghosts of Onyx definitely had a fair amount, too.

Actually he does, he's very talkative with other spartans and marines. like that marine who was asking him about joining the spartans, in the fall of reach.

You aren't Chief. You are playing as Chief.

The idea of a first person shooter is to simulate real life. as such, it deletes any kind of barrier between you and the protagonist and hence fully immerses you. Dont believe me? ask the guys who invented the first person shooters id Software, they will gladly tell you that their idea was to get rid of that boundary and to make the player feel liek he was the actual hero.

All of the previous Halos' did that just fine and made the player feel like HE/SHE was the actual hero of that universe (the player is the Master Chief), but in Halo 4 they suddenly introduced that barrier and form time to time remind you that you are not in that world of Halo but rather in your house just pressing buttons while some dud in green armour does stuff. See the problem here? You dont feel as immersed as with previous games.

Master cheif, shut up!

  • 12.27.2012 11:18 AM PDT

Well how else are they supposed to communicate what's happening? It's only him and Cortana. Do you want Cortana carrying on conversations with herself to preserve Chief's quietness that seems so important to you fanboys?

So you liked it when he was a one-dimensional character spouting off "aweshume" quotes?

I'm still waiting for examples of "childish" or "pointless" dialogue.

That's all fine and dandy, but that's not the story 343 is trying to tell. Master Chief actually has a character in the novels and they decided it's about time to evolve Chief as a character.

I was still plenty immersed in this game, more so in fact than previous Halo campaigns because the atmosphere was phenomenal.

And please, Chief talks more than previous games but he still is nowhere compared to other FPS franchises. I'm still waiting for examples of "pointless" or "childish" dialogue/behavior.

Soon to be breaking news:

US Coast Guard prepares for massive rescue mission after Iranian fleet sinks off shore. Reports say a small thunderstorm caused most of the ships to simply...fall apart.

While I like that the Chief is more talkative, I do think that his dialogue about Storm being fanatical wasn't needed.

Other than that, I can't think of anything.

Oh yeah, nothing... It's nothing but arrogant pub gossip.

I believe Bungie wrote 117 sort of emotionless and quiet on purpose, because it allowed the player to use his imagination on what he's thinking in any given situation. Sure, he had this certain locked path in what he says and what his stance on some things are, but most of it was free for you to interpret. 343i may be in charge, but that doesn't mean they "understand" Chief's character. They just wrote their own interpretation of him reacting to his surroundings and the situations he's put in Halo 4. That said, I can't say I found anything disagreeable in what they did with the Master Chief. It all made sense for the most part.

I do think he became a lot more uninteresting as a character, however. He's just not that enigmatic anymore, nor does he make you think as much about him. It's all kind of spoon-fed now. They might as well take his helmet off, because it won't make any difference.

tl;dr

while john's character in halo 4 had much more depth than before, he also lost nearly everything that made him so intriguing in the first place.

in other words, you don't have to be a writer in the Halo series to understand the Chief's character.

but uhh, I guess Halo 4 changes that huh.

edit: fixed a few annoying errors
