Long story short. They turned Halo from a story based game into a super elite competetive multiplayer arena.
I wouldn't say Halo started out as "story-focused." It certainly has a much weaker plot than Marathon 1 did. I would say it's an action-focused game with the decency to provide a pretext for the action.
While Halo 2 did have a stronger plot than 3, I really don't see how MLG had anything to do with that. Even attempting to argue that the popularity of multiplayer caused this is difficult, so trying to argue that it was caused by a relatively small portion of the playerbase is even more outlandish.
As for MLG, the community itself is rather irritating, and it's basically as useless as sports but without the athletic ability or teamwork (outside of the actual players). Honestly, the fact that so many children idolize it is funny, if not a little sad.
I also find their gametypes tend to be a bit boring, and honestly they make the game feel dumbed-down. Reducing the number of variables you have to account for doesn't equal "skill" in my opinion. That said, I have (so far) always had the option to not play their gametypes.
All in all, I've never had a problem with the organization itself, but it's not something I'm interested in or want to be a part of.
