That's still not the point. Why spend $800 for a computer you don't need when all you want to do is stream media and play small, fun titles on your TV for under $100?

Guess what you can do that with a cheap laptop which just about everybody has. I fail to see the point in this product if that is all it can do.
Not on your TV, and not for under $100.

Yes, but on the TV, with a decent controller, and you don't have to buy a -blam!- computer to run it.

Most people need/have a laptop that can run low spec games and is portable. Most laptops can connect up to a TV with little effort and a lot of games support controllers. You are acting like I am saying people should go out and buy a crappy laptop to do what OUYA does when the truth is I am not since most people can already do so with the tech they have.

But it's largely a lot more effort for something that isn't remotely close to an all-inclusive package.

It won't. It wouldn't have received the support it has if that was the case.

I don't see the Ouya doing well

You're still missing it. You keep mentioning running it on an old laptop. That's clunky and irritating, and it's much better to play on a TV. What about the entire indie sector? It's an open platform for them to grow and expand, and imo indie games provide some of the most fun I've had playing games. More than the majority of AAA titles.

There are tons of indie games on Steam and various other websites for very little money. I doubt it will have any unique indie games since indie devs don't try to alienate themselves from a potential profit. As for playing on an old laptop clunky and annoying how so?

What is the point of it? If you want freedom get a gaming computer.
Cheap, fun, non-AAA games and media streaming at a very low price. Get a gaming computer isn't a valid argument when the OUYA is $99 and a decent gaming rig is upwards of $600.
As long as you aren't a little kiddie without a job, $800 is easy to save.

I'm going to say what I've always said to the Flood about this: If you can't see the point of it, you aren't even close to its target demographic.
Yeah, because playing games on a computer is everything.
A 800$ computer can play emulators, stream music/videos play indie games and is already open source, ala Ubuntu if you all do is stream media, and play Indie games.

How so I can easily hook up my 4 year old laptop to my TV with a simple HDMI cable? As for a controller those are beyond easy to set up.

Considering there are already many indie devs starting up just for the OUYA and it's already got several exclusive titles, you're wrong.

A laptop doesn't have a built in system for connecting to the TV, or using controllers. It doesn't have any community based systems such as those shown by Xbox Live. The OUYA does.

Yep. Pity it's 8 times the price.

I doubt any of them are even half decent indie games while there are tons of great indie games on Steam and other websites. As for the TV and controller thing look at my other post simply put I seriously doubt you have played any games on your computer using a controller or TV.

Several of the games are very good. Of course I have, and I still support the OUYA.

Let me ask you all this. If it's going to tank so badly, why does it have such a large backing?

Because people are stupid and like to throw money at mindless things.

Give me the names of these very good games. As for backing people will always back what they view to be a potential chance for a potential big profit. It is why something like OnLive was able to launch. Though inevitably it all matters about if there is a market for this kind of device. In the end at that price range it has to compete with console and handhelds all of which off a wider variety of games. If it can only run old games then it has to compete with old PC's which can already do so without spending the extra money.

Of course. Explains why large companies such as Unity are completely backing it, doesn't it.

Human Element, for instance.

It has them. It doesn't have them built in. You have to mess around with drivers and extra software and god knows what to get it to work. OUYA is plug and play, and the community is unified.

$9 million in funding is not a large backing. A few developers porting games to a system when they probably are already going to do so for phones/tablets it not a huge backing. Very few games are Ouya exclusive.

The thing is timed to come out right around the PS4's release and after the XBox 720.

There is really going to be no way the thing is going to succeed in any large scale in the open market. No one wants a gaming console that performs like a tablet - it lacks the portability of a tablet/phone and it lacks the power of a computer/console.

It will fail.

$9 million kickstarter backing alone, ignoring external investment and backing from large companies.

Let me ask you this, when does the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out? Because the OUYA comes out March/April 2013.

Human Element, for instance.

So let me get this straight. A game is planning on coming out in 2015 has from what I can tell no gameplay footage and is from the sounds of it a standard zombie game is a very good game right? If yes then you have some strong faith in what other people tell you because in the real world a lot of people will lie to you to sell their product. Do you often get screwed over by people?

Excuse that, I misread the Ouya page on release date as 2014.

  • 12.28.2012 5:21 AM PDT

Let's look at it from another perspective, from the indie dev trying to get his game noticed. On PSN: lol, not going to happen.
On XBLA: Costs tens of thousands of dollars to MS just to get it verified, on top of more licenses for software and engines to develop for the Xbox.
For Nintendo: forget it.
Steam: Quite expensive, long vetting process.
OUYA: $99 for the console, short vetting process. Done.

All the same, I bet if you made a poll, right now, if people would buy the Ouya for $100, you'd have 60%+ of the Flood say no.
