Most probably, but that's an approximate if it were at max, anyway. Realistically, it would take longer.

So it would take between 7-20 days to reach Mars? Awesome.

After acceleration is maxed out i would think. But still, much faster than what it is today.

Only downside is the phenomenal amount of time it would take for the ion drive to reach the max speed of 200,000 km/h.

I mean, it takes 3 days for it to reach 60 km/h - somebody do the math.

That isn't that engine, that's another last generation engine.

The article gives the time to reach terminal velocity as 10,000 hours, or just over a year.

3 days to reach 60 km/h? You know something is wrong when a normal car would be able to outrace a space rocket.

That's easily an extra week or two. If not, then slightly longer/shorter.

This engine is still in the same order of magnitude.

Or less, since the ship will be in motion, covering ground...er Space. Its not like it takes one year in an idle state and then ZIPZ to mars in 7-20 days. Im sure the crew will die or not if it went from 0 to 200,000 lol

Cept the 3 days was the last gen engine from decade ago.

Also iO don't think this engine is made for mars but rather long distances like Jupiter or Neptune where it would be a lot faster.

How on earth does a rocket in space have a 'top speed'? Last I checked, motion is relative.

Also, you folks need to read the article. it takes literally hundreds of days to speed up.

  • 12.28.2012 11:03 AM PDT

Will it take a person to Mars?

> Motion is relative
> There is no such thing as a top speed in space

Please explain what bizarre thought process led you to believe the first statement necessitates the second.

Modern car manufactures: Car runs for ~300 miles before needing to refuel. On Earth. Little places to go.

Nasa: Engine can run for ~5+ years nonstop traverse space.

Nahman Jayden, Eff bee eye. I herd that you're the origammy killah...

It's good for long distance missions. It's acceleration hinders it, but that makes no difference when it comes to missions that would take several years for normal spacecraft to complete. This is quite exciting

So you went to the trouble of clicking on my profile, either to send a group invite or hate message, or to check my Halo stats and call me a BK. I like Peanut Butter Waffles.

What if it hit something, like a space rock? Seems very likely.

Keep in mind, 0 to 60 MPH in few days was from last generation engine, meaning that acceleration on NEXT engine would be considerably faster.

And, yes, it is not 7-20 days to Mars, it's about one year or less. So that is certainly good news, since last generation engines took couple of years for probes to reach Mars. In next few decades, we should able plausible manned missions to Mars and time between distance considerably reduced to months to weeks.
