I am a pharmaceutical scientist. I received my Masters degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2010, after working as a Pharmacist for 4 years. I currently work in King of Prussia, PA, and focus on the analytical chemistry of small molecule APIs. My clients include some of the most well known big pharma companies in the world.

*sigh*
Countries with increased regulation (not restriction) of firearms tend to have less firearm-related homicides per capita.
I wish Americans would stop pretending the only choices were between restricting all guns or letting everyone have an assault rifle. Look at Switzerland, look at Canada, for -blam!- 's sake America, learn from other countries for once /rantEvery year since 2006, gun-related homicides have been on the decline. Couple that with the fact that 1.5 out of every 5000 gun owners (0.027% roughly) is responsible for a gun-related homicide and I don't see a huge problem here.
Now, I don't think it's necessary or appropriate for private citizens to own an assault rifle, but that won't stop people from using other firearms or making illegal modifications. Ban guns and people will start using nail guns, or shovels, or homemade explosives, etc. The overwhelming majority of guns owners are safe and of no threat to ordinary citizens.
The real problem to solve is figuring out how to make sure unregistered weapons don't get in the hands of people. There needs to be a paper trail of some sort any time firearms change hands and there can be no exceptions to this.
As a last note, your credibility takes a huge hit when you say that (paraphrasing) "Americans need to stop pretending that the only choices are all or nothing". That's too broad a generalization, and the same mentality can be said about many people on the outside looking in (i.e. foreigners). You should have a little more class than to make such a derogatory claim about hundreds of millions of people, many of which have no opinion on the subject matter.
EDIT: Prior post of mine that cites sources for my stats.
