Subject: Animals and Humans: What separates us?

We are sentient beings that can work together to learn and pass knowledge down through generations. We are also among the only animals on Earth that can use tools effectively to reach a goal, and we are currently the only ones that have the ability to make fire.

I'll bring the tritium laser cutters if you bring the beer!

Funny story.

Dolphins act more like us than like other animals.

Few animals are self aware, as well as sentient. That is somewhere to start...

“If we will disbelieve everything, because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much what as wisely as he who would not use his legs, but sit still and perish, because he had no wings to fly.” - John Locke

"How can anyone be enlightened? Truth after all is so poorly lit." - Rush

First of all, humans are animals. We are a part of this planet, not something removed.

Secondly, humans are a unique animal foremost I'd argue in that we have the capacity to reason

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

A conscious. Humans have a conscious while animals don't.

I think you mean consciousness of their consciousness. We are all aware as living beings. But we are aware of our awareness, and can critically think ;)

Nope. Animals lack a conscious mind. They act on behaviors.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Are you trying to say conscience (an aptitude, faculty, intuition or judgment of the intellect that distinguishes right from wrong) or a consciousness (state of being aware of an external object or something within oneself)?

Actually, both. The classical conditioning theory with Pavlov's dog.

It is quite debatable. Some animals, almost always mammals, tend to exhibit behavior that shows they are aware, have "learned" from past experiences, and can react. What psychologists tend to believe separates us is out ability to time travel. (Consider the past, relate to the present, evaluate for the future). There is no way to truly quantify a thought, so it is really just anecdotal at the moment. Awareness of awareness is a separate issue. And, by definition, consciousness is simply being alert of the surroundings. Our ability to contemplate our occupation of space is different.

Dolphins sure don't, and octopi are also extremely intelligent.

And there was that one lizard that would hang by it's dead children long after they died and mourn them, which most certainly isn't just a behavior quirk.
