So, if I understand this correctly, you pay $30 and get a kit to train your goldfish, which one day after training dies and gets flushed down the toilet... so you're out $30 AND a goldfish?From the FAQ:
How long does it take to teach a fish tricks?
On average it takes 2, 15 minute sessions a day. The tricks build upon each other and take about a week per trick for your fish to learn and complete. With steady training your fish should be able to complete all the tricks in the kit in a couple months.

So you should get a goodly amount of time to enjoy your fish tricks before it passes away.
Assuming said fish lasts a couple months.
Personally I still see this as almost on the level of buying a pet rock. That's just me though.
