Is Bungie.net too cliquey?

Will new members have a difficult time being accepted by the older, and more vocal groups here on b.net?

I'v been here for over six years, and have yet to find a group I fit in with, but maybe it's just me.

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

Finding a niche is a normal part of human nature. Some people do it more than others. I like to meet people from different backgrounds, both in real life, and on Bungie.net.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

I don't think people will be given a hard time. At least not by the majority, though there are always a few exceptions.

In fact, I wouldn't put past a lot of the older, seemingly more cynical members to be helpful and decent when new members roll around.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Bungie.net itself is kind of a large clique and we have many smaller cliques within our own clique.

Right now people may tend to act superior with their cliques' but come time new people join they are going to stop or be stopped.

Bungie doesn't like French on their site.

I don't think much will change. Members will still be spazzes. Heroics will still think they're hot -blam!-. Legendarys' will still think they're most important out of everyone on B.net. And lastly, Mythic will still control threads from their private groups.

To the most part no, I honestly think our community is a pretty welcoming community. But striving for a friendlier community should be something we all strive for on here and in real life.

The Flood forum has become it's own entity in some ways. It is a mix of of people from casual viewers to hardcore fans mingling together.

You're just a member. How dare you come to the Community forum?

Just kidding, of course. No, I think we are a fairly welcoming community.

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

People always have their usual group of friends that they hang out with whether it's online (any website) or in real life. People also tend to migrate towards those that are about the same age as their own, with some exceptions.

It's something that's unavoidable. The best thing that we can do is be welcoming to every member, but ultimately it's up to each individual to decide their own path.

Over six years? I'm not one with the maths, but your join date and today's date don't quite add up to "over six years".

But, that's beside the point.

I don't think new members will have an issue with "fitting" in. Imo, a gamer is a gamer. We're all one big clique regardless of join date.

  • 12.28.2012 12:57 PM PDT

Not really, if you be who you are, online and in the real world then you'll feel much better and should find it easier to fit in more - rather then trying to step up to something you're not.

Relax and be you.

  • 12.28.2012 12:58 PM PDT

I don't think so. When I was newer I used to play with a good amount of the well known members here and they all made me feel pretty welcome.

I'm kind of a hermit now but you get what you put in. If someone wants to get in with a group then they'll make some effort to do it. Everyone's pretty open here.

This.

I don't think this place is really spacial compared to any other forum on the internet.

DeeJ's Challenge

I remember when I was new here and stuck around because of how nice and helpful Hylebos, Helveck, and True Underdog were to me. Is it odd that we're all here in this thread? Honestly, I feel like I am obligated to help new members because what a great experience I had here early on.

Don't think it is.. yeah there may be a little, but in a whole of Bungie.net no.

I think they won't have a hard time fitting in, if of course we all try and be welcoming to them and help them out.

Key

Meh, not really. The only two groups that act group-like outside the PGs and who actually mention their group unprovoked are the ninjas with HFCS and Mythx. I've only ever seen Sapphire be a dick about it in the Mains, and that was only one time.

All in all, if you want to get into a PG, you get into a PG, and if you don't people tend to not talk about it unprovoked in the Mains. PGs are PGs and Mains are Mains. They're separate entities, so even if people ARE cliquey you don't really notice.

Astronomy Picture of the Day!

Making friends on this site is just like anywhere else, it takes work and it's not going to happen right away. My advice to anyone looking for friends here is to join a few moderately sized groups to participate in. That's primarily how I made all of my friends in my few years here.

Yes, but I choose to ignore it. Makes things a lot more tolerable in the long run.

I'v been here for over six years, and have yet to find a group I fit in with, but maybe it's just me.

It might just be you. Over the course of time ive spent here there have been dozens of groups ive been through, and most of them have been great to me. Some were for specific kinds of members, but most of them are completely open to anyone and the members of it are usually very accepting people because they want the group to grow.

  • 12.28.2012 2:04 PM PDT

You have to have a certain level of tolerance if you want to find a group that is suitable for you. Every group has its good aspects and bad aspects, you just have to look past some of the bad aspects to find your true calling.
