Of there's one technology the world needs to improve on, it's Internet speed. If everyone had that, the world would be a better place.
I was told he have had this for quite some time, just not available for the public until recently. Companies such as Verizon are releasing packages with upload and download speeds up to 130MBPS, which aren't really needed unless you're running a server of some sort.

Or downloading... stuff. From the free internet! :D

Mines

How do you even do that? Is it modems or Internet providers that gauge Internet speed? I must have answers!

Note that his ping is lower than mine, which means slower connection time with the server.

But low ping = good ping.
And my speed is around 2.5 mps with around 150 ping.
And I meant how do you get the speed? Is it the modem's fault, or the Internet provider?

Your server is too far away.

Derp, I meant higher. Mine is at 9-10Mbps

My stepfather gave me this modem from the cable company he works for.
Upload and download speeds don't really matter if your ping is low.

So, a better modem would help.

And sorry about the off-topocness of the thread, OP.

Whatever. I guess I'll just have to move the PC. Thanks anyways.

I've challenged my beliefs. What is the book about?

I find that this is usually untrue. If religious people honestly, diligently and intelligently challenged their beliefs, there would be no religious people.

What's the wireless adapter you're using?

What is PING?
latency, or the time it takes for data packets to either reach their destination or reach their destination and return to sender.

Cat5 will offer latency and higher transfer speed than most 802.11 devices on the market, that's to be expected.

All right I'm putting this out there for everybody and anybody who has high pings.

First, make sure your computer is updated. This will effect a lot more then people realize. Out of date software won't configure correctly and cause problems. Another thing to check is to make sure your computer time and date are correct. This will cause a problem if it's not correct.

Secondly, every game has its own ports that it uses on pc. Look up what ports that game requires and set them up in your modem/routers configuration page. To access this page it needs to be typed into a web box. If you haven't changed the router/modems login information here is how to pull them up.
There's different IP's you can use.

Netgear is usually 10.0.0.1
Most of the other modems/routers are as follows.
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.2.1
There's also www.routerlogin.com which also works for Netgears. Really only time this is used when you have two or more routers hookedup.

The username and password can be different depending upon the router/modem. They usually are as follows.

Username: admin
Password: password

Username: (leave blank)
password: password

username: admin
password: admin

These only work if you haven't changed the login settings and if the router/modem doesn't have preset login credentials.

Once on your router/modem page you need to find NAT/port forwarding/Lan/ orwhatever yours is.

This page is where you input those ports for that game. Once that is done you need to pull up your computer firewall. Also, security programs like anti-virus, etc can block the games if not allowed.

In your firewall you have to go to advanced. In the advanced area you'll see inbound and outbound. Here you need to input those ports again for each game on both inbound and outbound.

Once done with all this check your speed again. Since you're using an adapter it will be higher then a cord but way less then 200ms. This should drop it to about 30-60 ms. With a cord it will be around 5-15ms.

That's about it.

I'm talking about why his ping is so high. Most likely it's because the signal is being blocked somewhere let that be the router/modem wireless. I'm typing what to do to decrease that signal blockage. It won't be extremely good like 5-15ms but it's better then 200ms.

Since the OP said Cord is not a possible idea this is the next best solution. Of course if the OP just wants to move the pc that's on them.

The next best solution are powered ethernet adapters.

Most of your post had nothing to do with latency at all

latency is just inherent to your typical 802.11 standard (a/b/g mostly) because of the way overhead is applied to compensate for the lack of collision detection as well as the lack of full-duplex transmission. Without knowing what standard he's using and what interference from the building and nearby devices may be impacting his signal it's not going to be easy diagnosing the problem, if there is one (which there probably isn't) and forwarding traffic to certain ports is probably not going to help.
