a mossberg full price isn't even $450, you're being taken for a ride.

go to a different store.

Yeah, one with a normal wooden stock and lacking the pistol grip. I also live in California, so the price for a good firearm is higher.

Personally I would by a large-caliber semiautomatic handgun. At least 10mm, but .45 or 12.7 (depending on exactly what is and isn't available/legal in your area) will put someone on their ass.

When you're panicking, you can't properly aim a pistol.

Proven fact.

I dont think robbers will care, if someone is shooting a gun in their general direction then i think they will get the hell out

No, he is right, and there is a sheer intimidation factor to a shotgun.

My solution; don't panic.

Anything above a handgun is overkill. You're just wasting your money at that point.

minus the fact that there may be more people who want to harm you , you would want to have something that has more firepower

be prepared for a lot of flame. IMO its good that a law abiding citizen will purchase a gun to defend your home.

OT: I think any firearm will be good enough as long as you know how to responsibly take care of it, put it in a safe, trigger guard etc.

Off-topic: depending on where you live (I think its chicago) they are adding a %25 tax to firearm purchases to help stop gang killings apparently

Right now, I live south of San Jose, CA. my Hometown's crime rate, violent crime rate has begun to go up recently. So I thought it best to buy a firearm before they became even harder to get here.

Circle Jerkin' I got my wiener workin'

Go with a Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge. They are excellent shotguns that will never let you down. Look for one that is a lower price though. Even in this market it should not be over $350.

Learn about this thing called a magazine. Also, you come off as incredibly paranoid.

no, but when there are multiple people who have firearms you vs three guys isnt going to help especially when they are firing at you. A semi-automatic would even the playing field since it can fire larger rounds faster and dont start saying that a semi-automatic is an assault weapon

You should get an AK-47, it's much better. Make sure you let a few rounds off out of your window every second Thursday of the month. That way your neighbors know not to mess with you.
either they got hem over seas or from the black market but last time i checked purchasing or being in the possession of an AK is illegal. Since OP is just looking for a firearm to defend his home i seriously doubt an AK will suffice. While he will win when it comes to firepower, he may get arrested for possessing a banned firearm which wouldnt help at all
Your point is valid, but I was joking around. Welcome to the internet.

and by all rights you should, you are doing the correct thing by defending your family. Just be responsible, with the firearm. Educate your kids (assuming you have some) about it, tell them its not a toy and they are never to touch it, put it in a safe place preferably a safe with the trigger guard over it so no one slips their finger in there by accident and make sure there is no ammo in in especially in the chamber.

and make sure you take a safety class as well

You seem to think aiming a rifle in a confined area is easier than aiming a pistol. You're wrong.

well jeez sherlock no -blam!- its not easy as a pistol! but you could be in a room or the kitchen basically if your not in a hallway then you should be able to use it effectively

Way too much time and money invested for paranoia.

I went to my local gun store, and the clerk said the Mossberg 500 would be good. This particular Mossberg 500 has an adjustable, fully synthetic stock, a 5 shell ammo carrier on the right hand side of the stock, a pistol grip, and has a shorter barrel. It is currently on sale for $430.

Is there anything else you would get, or should I commit to it?

....

You... you lucky bastard. The cheapest one at the store was a Stevens, for 120.

A M1911A1 would be good to go with that shotgun so if you go around a corner and someone grabs the barrel you have a pistol.

I would check the legal age of owning a firearm, it maybe 18 in some states if i remember

in my stat when you are 18 you can buy a rifle or a shotgun, handguns can be purchased at age 21 (idk why its not the reverse)
