It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I received a $30 gift card for Chapters over the holidays, and I suppose I will need to come to a conclusion as to what to spend it on. Might any avid readers on the Flood recommend me a good book or two?

I'm mostly into sci-fi, but I figure I should step out of my comfort zone a little.

Books I've read recently:
.Dune
.1984
.All the Halo books
.All the Mass Effect Books
.Gears of War - Coalitions End
.World War Z
EDIT: Forgot to add Enders Game.

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

IT, by Stephen King.

In my opinion, I don't care who laughs last or first. As long as I laugh in the process, everything is good.

If you want to step out of your comfort zone, you should give the series "A Song of Ice and Fire" a try.

Rather than simply offer you my favorites, I'm going to ask you something:

I see Dune and Ender's Game on that list. Did you love those books?

If the answer is yes, are you a fan of Fantasy as well as Science Fiction?

If you answered yes to both, then you should check out 'The Wheel of Time.' The first book is 'The Eye of the World.'

It is the single greatest fantasy series in history in my opinion- FAR eclipsing that of LOTR and the likes. The final book comes out this January.

A quick summary if you're interested. There is something called the 'One Power.' Certain people are born with the ability to channel this. Three thousand years ago a man called 'The Dragon' gathered 100 male channelers in an attempt to defeat the Dark One, their equivalent of Satan. The result was the Dark One poisoning the male half of the One Power, driving every male channeler insane. Driven insane, the Dragon channeled so much of the One Power he moved continents and destroyed all civilization. He stopped the Dark One, but at an enormous cost. He merely sealed him temporarily. And his minions are still out there.

The book takes place three thousand years later. Three boys living in farmland eventually encounter an Aes Sedai, a female channeler. She claims the Dark One is looking for them and they begin an amazing journey to discover why.

Just for book one. There are 14 books, each one phenomenal. Funnily enough, I'm about to go read it right now. I'm rereading the series again in preperation for the final book coming out in two weeks after 23 years of waiting for the conclusion (Eye of the World was published in 1990). So excited.

It was written by 'Robert Jordon.' I would highly recommend this series above all others. I'd say at least try the first book to see if you like the others. And hey- it is really long with tiny print like LOTR and all sure, and it's definitely not an easy read... but at least it's more fast paced and a bit easier than such books.

I think you'll like the Ender's Game series. Classic Sci-Fi, and because I've enjoyed it everyone reccomends Dune to me.

If you really want out of your comfort zone, I'm currently enjoying Spice and Wolf.

Hah yeah. It's sort of silly but it's still true: The fanbase of Dune is 100% interchangeable with that of Ender's Game, and the fanbase of Ender's Game is completely interchangeable with its strong readers with Dune.
