Subject: Do Spaceships Have Vents

I am doing some research for a 3D animation I'm making and I want to make sure everything is consistent. Without going into detail someone has to enter a Space Station without being detected and enters a Vent, which got me wondering, do they even have vents, or rather would they? Going outside as well?

Could that work or would it make no sense?

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Do cars have vents?

Well, not from outside...

Inside would be okay.

It would have to be a vent for some kind of hazardous substance.

Which means this someone would have to wear a protective suit to resist said substance.

The person would then have to cut into the space station using micro nanites to eat away at the outside surface.

This would cause explosive decompression, but maybe if he moved fast enough, he could jet thrust inside before the doors close and that section of the space station is sealed off.

I'm sure you can think of something :D

What do you think would be an exterior opening that could go undetected in a Space Station.

I'd imagine, so you can decompress areas in case of fire and the likes. But they would be completely sealed shut otherwise. You can't have air escaping.

So methinks you're going to need to find an alternate access point. Try pulling a Wall-E. Sneak in with a maintenance drone or something.

Some sort of waste disposal airlock perhaps?

Possibly, releasing trash into space through an automated
airlock.

Depends on the station though.

Edit: Got ninja'd

Unto the Fray we go

Typically a vent on a spacecraft would have several airlocks in the ventilation systems to expel debris from the ships air.

Some ships do not have vents that go out, but rather the internal ventilation will have filters that will need cleaning or changing from time to time.

I was also thinking something of a Waste Propulsion System, which could be part of the story, entering when the vent opens and sends out like Molten Metal (smelted trash sent out to space), then later on is forced to exit because of an unexpected second wind.

Also, remember that the "right" answer, might not be the best for a story.

Make it a heart pulsing moment. Anyways, seems to me like you're already headed on the right track.

But like you seem to know, its good to see what others say. Sometimes they surprise you. Good luck!

Thanks, it wont exactly be a fact-fest but I want it to make sense. Put detail into the small things, not just with the animations but with the Story Elements as well.

Link or it didn't happen.

Radiators, they have to pump the tremendous amount of heat somewhere.

This has been plenty of help, I've gone with the trash system, works perfectly with the story I've set. I've got the basic script up, can't wait to get it started.

Hanger Bay as well. Not to mention airlocks for servicing that may be smaller.

Proud Spartan II, COG soldier, Hero of time, and crowbar wielding scientist.

Air needs to flow throughout the whole ship, so yes, a cruiser would.
A small ship, probable not.
Small as in car.

Also, explain what you're doing. I'm curious, as someone with plans and Source SDK.

<(-_-)> Teh mokey is not amused

They'd have to, though I doubt said vents would be in direct contact with the exterior of the ship. The only way someone would be able to get in would be either by cutting through the hull, which would give them away, or entering through an airlock without being detected, meaning the crew would have to be already using it for something. Perhaps a waste disposal airlock?

The problem with Hanger Bays is that it would be too big and obvious. There would be no way to enter a Hanger Bay without being detected.

From the outside? Uhh, I'm not sure.

From the inside? Sure. Air has to circulate somehow.

Torpedo pods or maybe a malfunctioning airlock. As I recall that's what was used in Republic Commando when they need to do the same thing.

Mind finding me a video, could use it as a reference.
