Subject: Why have system requirements?

Why do companies feel the need to have them? Why cant I run Crysis 2, or Far-Cry 3 with crappy textures, and models If I want to? There could be some form of a warning, that you are running the game with hardware that is not recommended, and that the experience may be limited. Why not? What does this take away? Why dont developers ever do this?

The Only downside is there will be little motivation for upgrades. And sales would slow down in that department. But the GAME's sales itself would no doubt rise...
Why flood? Why?

Do I know how computers work?

Partially. Elaborate for a lesser mind please.

I'd really and genuinely like some form of an explanation. I dont see how its technically impossible to simply dum down textures and things of the like to lower system requirements. What am I missing?

  • 12.28.2012 8:50 PM PDT

I'll assume this is a legitimate concern and respond accordingly. Here goes.

You can. Most, if not all games have the option to lower the graphics. If your computer can't handle the game at the Lowest specs then it just won't work. Also if your computer can't run a game at the Lowest specs, you need an upgrade. I spent 50 bucks on my first GPU way back when and I was playing games on Medium fine, most games even on High without a problem playing normally.

Not to mention it was a Stock Office Computer with a crappy GPU. Low Settings on a PC are Highly Superior to PS3 Graphics, Wii U seems promising though. It may be at Low Graphics.

You don't have a "lesser mind". Don't ever think that about yourself.

Most PC games have "minimum system requirements" because the game cannnot run on computers that don't have the parts good enough to run them, even with the lowest-quality textures.

But many tripple A games on their lowest setting still have alright looking textures. Why cant those be turned down and made crappier?

Wut.
What does that have to do with anything?

I'm wondering why it cant be done. Quit jumping to conclusions.

Why though? How does that affect the quality of the game beyond extending the playerbase to those with lower-tier PC's.

They shouldn't have to lower their standards.

And yeah, you can, but pretty much all companies (that like to put a focus on good graphics in their videogames) like to uphold a certain quality of the game, so that it looks like a good game to play even if it's running at it's lowest specs. With computers changing every day, the quality of new computer parts changes as well, so there is a very wide scale of performance; the same computer you have now might not be able to run any "modern" games of 2015 or 2018. That's why they have to set a bar; they have to say "basically to run this game, you should have a computer that's at least 2-3 years old"

Because the developers don't want to have people with inferior hardware complaining that they can't run the game. Nothings stopping you from trying, though.

  • 12.28.2012 8:57 PM PDT

I disagree with the lower-minds statement. I really believe that my mind is incapable of thinking at a level some are able to.

OT: But is there really no way to make every texture worse?

For instance. What is the typical high-tier PC game doing (on a non graphical level) that other less graphically demanding games arnt? Why cant a player simply tweak everything to the absolute lowest. From what I have seen the "minimum requirements" could really be lower.

Thank-you. This has been one of the few real question answering posts. So, I suppose they can, but there is a standard to uphold. Yeah, I guess I understand that. Thanks.

Because no matter how much the dumb it down, there will always be a computer that can't play it.

There will ALWAYS be a computer that doesn't have enough RAM, or processing power, or even a good enough graphics or sound card. that's jut how it is.

Developers either build or adapt some sort of engine to run their game. These engines require some baseline of what they expect the consumer to have in order to run the game. You may strip away all of the graphics in a game to your heart's desire, but if the engine doesn't work with your hardware (because it's too weak) then there isn't an amount of "ugly" you can make a game look like and have it run on any machine.

Admin of Coup D Bungie

PM me any Coup questions you have.

Lol, lowering the textures doesn't always mean computers with lower specs can run them. You also have to consider the size of the game world and the way its built, so to speak.
