I agree that the side quests are pretty bad. I gave up on a lot of the Hunting and Wanted missions mid-way through the game because it got really repetitive. That said, the main story is pretty good. I didn't really connect with the Jason, the main character, and some of the plot elements weren't that good, but, the narrative kept me interested until the end. By the time I had beat the game, I had all the outposts liberated and the whole map uncovered, as well as all the other achievements in the game, so I was ready to stop playing.
It kept me entertained for about 20 hours, and it was 20 hours of fun. It never felt boring or repetitive to me (other than the side quests, which I stopped doing).
I really liked the Rakyat missions. And I actually like the assassination missions because it was another reason to try and string together a bunch of cool takedowns. Hunting missions were dumb tho imo, I preferred just exploring and hunting by myself.
