But the truth is that if your commanding officer points at a four year old girl and says "kill her", you have to kill her.

You're a bit of a moron, aren't you?

It's true, though.

Except it's 100% untrue.

Ever heard of Vietnam?

Of course they do. It was illegal to kill civilians then, and it's illegal now.

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean that you won't be ordered to do it.

And how does that conclusion follow from Vietnam? Soldiers HAD free will (without getting too metaphysical about it) in Vietnam. A lot of them chose either to not exercise it or to act sadistically with it. They could have refused. They could have suffered the punishment. But many of them didn't. Some of them DID. The only reason why we tend to overlook the fact that they could have refused is that they are Americans--if any other country, particularly our nation's enemies, commits a war-crime, they are indictable; if we commit one, our actions are justified. And why? Because America is the top dog. Now, that isn't fair, but that is the way our nation has been operating for close to the last century.

In Vietnam, soldiers were ordered to kill civilians. Was it illegal? Yes. Were they ordered to anyway? Yes.

How the hell is my brain not capable of connecting thoughts? How about you address my goddam argument?

Dude, it has been addressed. Just because you are ordered to do something, that doesn't vanquish your free will.

Already did. Your argument is nonsense. Were soldiers ordered to kill civilians? Maybe. That was not the strategy of the U.S. Being ordered to do something illegal leaves you with a choice...to do it or not to do it. Doing it would be a crime, doing it would not be. There you go. Soldiers that kill civilians indiscriminately are criminals. I'm not sure how you're having trouble processing that.

Boot camp pretty much exists to break you down and make you dependent on the Army for orders. And when you have three grown-ass men shouting orders at you; men who you have pretty been forced to worship like God for three or four years, you pretty much do what they say. It's why the atrocities in Vietnam happened, not because the soldiers were "sadistic".

It's a pretty -blam!- up process, actually.

I have a feeling you watched Full Metal Jacket and now you have a FMJ complex.

First off, I'm going Navy, dude, nor Army.

Second off, Navy boot camp is not that bad AT ALL. I've had a lot of friends and my brother go through it; they said its cake. And they are not automatons. They are still perfectly rational.

Third off, what is this about worshipping your superiors? From what I understand, a lot of people end up just getting irritated at their superiors.

Garem, compared to Turkey, or milla, or me, what would you say is your actual experience with the armed forces, particularly the Navy?

Because you have so much experience in this area, don't you?

You've demonstrated numerous times that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Echo and Turkey, just ignore Garem and be the better man in the situation. If he wants to have his opinion on the military, so be it, it's because of the military he can do that. Plus, he's probably just doing it to follow with his popularity guide which involves going against the social norm, so by fighting with him you're just giving him more fire and helping him. Just drop it and ignore him.

As a philosopher, I am soooooooo not ready to even do that yet. But I won't open fire anymore if he's done making points. His conclusion appears to rest at "being a soldier is bad". So it is. So it is.

You seem to think I'm incorrect. I'm not.

Every thing I've said, I've backed up. Your responses have been along the lines of "Um, no." That's not an argument. That's a bland negation.
