The only horribly written character was Qui-Gonn Jinn, and I agree that Jar Jar Binks shouldn't have existed. But that's as far as I will go. Anakin might have been whiny but he was what everyone wanted him to be, a cocky hero who has everything taken away from him and turns evil.
The Originals set him up as a noble Jedi Knight who was tragically seduced by the Dark Side. Yet according to the Prequels he was bad from the start, ignoring the orders of his superiors, constantly wanting to be superior to everyone else, and going on at least one genocidal rampage before the end of the second movie.
That's not noble, that's insane. That isn't charmingly cocky, that's arrogantly psychopathic.

The thing I don't understand is not how people think the prequels were so bad, but how the original trilogy was so good. It was genuinely boring in some parts and much of the films seemed to exist merely to drag them out and make them seem longer.
Care to give examples?
