Subject: Easy way to become a better person

If I've given anyone that impression, I'm truly sorry. I have never meant to seem superior to anyone in any way. That's an elitist thing to do, and I hate elitists.

I'm not going to hold it against you, holding grudges is pointless. I'd just recommend that you read your posts from someone else's point of view before clicking "submit." It's your approach that gets a rise out of people.

I love The Catcher in the Rye! (Proper way to type a book title, not italicized like OP). I find much in common with Holden.

But OP, I have to say this. In Holden's spirit, you are being quite the phony with all these threads and posts.

Being nice to people you don't like is part of life. You'll get nowhere in life if you decide not to deal with people.

Gee,Thanks.

Reading books that change you life? Seriously what is this because the only book I read that "change" my life are the ones with nude girls in them?

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance had a pretty profound effect on me.

Don't get me wrong there are some pretty damn good books out there, but to actually change because of them imo just means you lack knowledge about life.

It's true. You're going to have a job where you wont like your coworkers, but you'll have to put up with them, anyway.

"Life is constantly fleeting from your grasp even from the very day it's bestowed upon you, but the shadow of death is always there, waiting for its chance to take you away."

"Even though many may not think so, ignorance and innocence are one and the same. The only difference is that one sounds nicer."

If Holden had the Internet, I'm sure he would try to convince people to come to his side.
Disagree.

He never tried to tell people what bothered him about their behaviors and phoniness. And he wanted to be a deaf-mute so he couldn't talk to people. Why would he use the internet to talk to people?

Holden was no perfect character, by any means. He was a bit phony himself, pretending to be nice to people while secretly hating them. He would have truly been the epitome of perfection if he would've said what's on his mind.
I see. So have you spoken your mind to every last person you've met? Being completely honest about everything you felt or thought that was relevant at the time?

Of course not. But I'm working on being more direct with people. There's always a way that we can improve.

The Bible.
The only thing that book does is give me a headache and make me feel sick.

Although I do realize it has been influential.

If you die from being "direct" at the wrong time, that would be a funny tale to tell...no offense, ironic deaths just make for humorous stories.

Insulting the community at large isn't a good way to bring about a positive change. Change by example, not by force.

So basically lie through your teeth if you're not nice already?
Isn't that kind of defeating the point?

To be honest, those only really work if you're prepared to have people and society chew you up and spit you out. I assure you, they'll only make you bitter.

Your average nice guy on The Flood.... D: ..... WAIT A MINUTE....

No. If you want real moral teachings in the form of good literature, read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. So much better.

The Catcher In The Rye is the best book ever written, though.

I read the first few chapters and saw the movie.

Italicized and underlined titles are both acceptable. Italics look better, though.

You're being a phony by not reading Grapes of Wrath and udging it off a few chapters and a movie.

Stop it.

You obviously lack reading comprehension. I never judged that book.

You need to read the whole book in order to see what I mean. The movie was watered down, and the best parts of the book (or any book for that matter,) don't happen in the first few chapters.

I might just have to put that book on my upcoming reading list. It is a classic, after all.
