It doesn't have a Monarch or Emperor for staters and the only expansion it has done is Hawaii.

America probably wishes it is an Empire but its not.

You mean the Mexican American War didn't count as expansionist?
I don't see Mexico under American rule, Texas joined on its own which pissed off Mexico and the war was to set the borders of texas.

Empires colonise countries not extend a border slightly.

Expansionist does not mean a country is empire. Plus, we GAINED ALOT of territory in the treaty ending the war.

An empire requires an emperor.

No it doesn't.
Either a monarch or a small group of people.

  • 12.29.2012 3:17 PM PDT

Jack of all trades, master of none.

No. No emperor, for a start. Also, America doesn't own any countries. States don't count, otherwise any country which was split into multiple sections would be considered an empire.

The US is in control of an "extensive group of states or countries" and its government acts as the supreme authority over those states or countries, hence it is an empire. /thread
Erm no.

Congress controls the USA not the President. The President is just signs stuff into power bit like our Queen.

The president can legally start a war for what? 70 days or something without congress support?

by that logic, the United Kingdom is an empire. The US is a country, each state is not a sovereign state.

Bungie doesn't like French on their site.

Empire - Lands ruled by single authority: a group of nations, territories, or peoples ruled by a single authority, especially an emperor or empress. Monarchy headed by emperor or empress: a monarchy that has an emperor or empress as its ruler.

The United States doesn't fit the definition of empire.

A country expanding its borders is not an Empire.

Germany is not an Empire yet it has 4 parts that merged together, same with Italy.

Okay? So what? By your definition of "empire", almost every country in existence falls under that category.

by that logic, the United Kingdom is an empire. The US is a country, each state is not a sovereign state.
The UK is actually an English Empire, Wales was Annexed by England and politically joined to Scotland along with N.Ireland being under British control.

technically it's a country made up of constituent states. Doesn't really qualify as an empire.

The United Kingdom IS an empire, just a very small one. So is France. And the states I'm referring to are territories like Guam and Puerto Rico and various islands.

The United States doesn't fit the definition of empire.

The problem is there isn't a unanimous definition of what constitutes an empire.

  • 12.29.2012 3:23 PM PDT

Jack of all trades, master of none.

If the USA is an empire, or ever has been, name a country which uses both it's own and America's national anthem? Many ex British colonies use the Royal Anthem as well as their own.

But they have chosen time and time again to remain apart of the Union.

England conquered another country = Empire.

Only now the countries have the power to leave if the people want it.

The United Kingdom is a sovereign state. There exists no British Empire today. The colonies of past aren't colonies today.
