And is pushing it a good idea?

Look at Linux; would you say it has advanced dramatically?
It's open source and everyone gets to make their own version, but have the versions gotten better over time? Is anyone thinking about improving it rather than personalizing or customizing it?

Look at Windows and Mac; are they advancing dramatically despite being changed by only one company?

I know a lot of the capability relies on technology which is reliant on time, but apart from that what can we do?

Which path is better to take and which is better for video games?

Mods for Skyrim seem to have given it a huge graphics boost. And the graphics aren't the only thing that matters. Have stories improved over time, too? Have developers slowly learned what binds a gamer to the story?

ITT: What is the best method of improving all aspects quickly and effectively? There has to be one. What companies are producing better games with each title and what methods are they using to make visible advancements?

Who's got AIDS?

Stop thinking that the game industry will change. The consumers have to vote with their wallets. The companies that some people hate for some reason are simply cashing in on what sells. Don't like something? Don't buy it.

Seriously...?

What is the main thing restricting and holding back games? Consoles and their archaic 7 year old hardware.

Stop thinking that the game industry will change.
This is cynical and pessimistic; both get you nowhere near advancing.

"Nothing will change" - look at the history of mankind.
If everyone doubted change, we wouldn't have as many scientific breakthroughs from pure curiosity and the need for change.

I think regression is the only possible path for gaming at this time. With prices of production and the flood of merchandise saturating the market, it looks to be getting more and more difficult for a producer to find themselves in the black at the end of the cycle. Many companies are desperately holding on to one or two profitable IP's to keep their heads above water while waiting and hoping for the next blockbuster.

I think the best thing for the market right now is to slow down attempting to cater to the public's whims of bigger, better, faster, and find a way to stabilize the industry monetarily. Once that happens, then continue seeking the "new hotness" at a pace the industry can handle.

well i think game producers need to go independent again. Instead of having to -blam!- out a halo or call of duty every year the company can focus on what they really want to make and spend time making it good instead of having to fit a larger corporations timeline and budget

Pretty much this. Newer hardware will allow companies to push the systems harder and develop new technologies (Xbox doesn't even support AA for christ's sake).
