I think Assassin's Creed is a plague to gaming and here are some reasons:
-No character progression. When you start as a little kid you are as powerful as when you finish the game, at adulthood. You can basically kill anyone in one move.
-Stupid map design. I'm not talking about oh Boston looks so unrealistic it's not historical I'm talking about the random little things they place around like logs that obstruct movement. Horses can't jump past that so that makes for very glitchy and overall bad horse gameplay as well.
-Horrible customization. Visual customization is near zero, at most just change of colors. There isn't any meaningful equipment customization either, all you can change is your weapons, which are more or less the same as well.
-Trash multiplayer. Seems like a tagged on feature that is supposed to make the game more replayable, but really the multiplayer is absolutely boring to play and I get bored after a few hours. In addition to that their servers are trash so it takes forever to even find a game. Also, during the first week of launch their servers didn't even work at all, so we had no multiplayer (PC).
-Zero replayability. I remembered back in Brotherhood the game was still somewhat worth playing after you finish the main story because of the Romulus dens and the Leonardo machines. But even that isn't much, most of Ubisoft's definition of having fun seems to be running around town chasing after feathers and finding flags. Now in AC3 there are even fewer side missions, and even more boring collectibles. Trash game is trash.
-Gameplay is horrible. Jump down into a haybale from fifteen stories up? No problem, not a scratch. Jump from two stories high without a haybale? Lose half your life. Makes sense.
-Stealth. Run into a fort, kill half the guards. Hide in a haybale. 20 seconds later the remaining guards give up searching because you supposedly "ran away". Come out of haybale and kill them all. Stealthy indeed.
-Combat. Spam the counter and attack buttons. Well done, you have learned to be an Assassin's Creed pro.
-Less new features than COD, same yearly release. What has changed from Brotherhood to Revelations, exactly? Now from Revelations to AC3, there are some new features like... oh wait just hunting and ships. That's it for $50.
-Downgrade in horse combat. In Brotherhood you can fight with a sword while riding a horse. In AC3 you can't even do anything from a horse except draw out a pistol and shoot people. Being a Native American assassin you'd expect to be able to utilize the power of the horse to the maximum.
-Let's see, how many good games in the series? AC1 is trash. AC2 is good. ACB is decent but really nothing new. ACR is trash. AC3 is bad. That makes 1 good game and 1 decent one.

Assassin's Creed sucks and Ubisoft sucks.

Oh right don't even get me started on the story.
AC1 - kill 10 guys because they are evil men
AC2 - find some futuristic metal ball called the apple. Throughout the entire game the story consists of finding it, losing it, finding it again, and losing it.
ACB - ditto
ACR - basically you just find a library that really isn't anything special in the first place.
AC3 - you are in an ancient temple and you have to find the key to open the door so you can unleash an alien who lives inside, who somehow can save earth from destruction just by being freed. Wat.

ummm dude..there are tons of side missions to do after the story is over. everything else you said I pretty much agree with, but I love the game. stop being butthurt about your own opinion.

Assassin's Creed suffers much more in the story department than anything else. Even Assassin's Creed II, which you rate as the best in the series, despite starting off strong, spiralled downwards to a wimper.

It's just very clear that whoever came up with the initial story left after the first game. Personally I feel that it was wrong to focus on Desmond whatsoever, the series would have benefited far more from focusing on the stories of different Assassins throughout history, their struggles against the templars, and most importantly, the constant presence and resurgence of these pieces of eden which link all the games together into one big mystery that is SLOWLY but surely revealed.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Well you've certainly got a point with AC3.

If I were them I would just cut out all that futuristic crap that makes no sense. But then there wouldn't be much connection between the series. It's a lose lose situation. The game series is crap anyway and needs to die.

If that's the case then the story of Halo summed up is some super soldier trying to find a big ass ring that'll destroy everything

I don't feel there needs to be a ton of things connecting between the series, history itself would be the glue that holds the entire thing together.

Assassins Creed I would be a story of an assassin fallen from grace slowly redeeming himself, and in that regard, it would be a good game. But at the end, they introduce the Apple of Eden which clearly has some kind of mystical power, and you're like "What the hell was that about?"

Assassins Creed II would be a story of an Assassin seeking revenge for his family. And again, the Apple of Eden would pop up, and some other pieces of eden would show up, and they would all have mystical power over humans. Slowly the truth would be revealed.

Game by game, the backstory of the universe is slowly revealed, until Miles Desmond comes along in a future where the Templars control the world. Then you can enjoy his story uncut, without this fast forwarding / rewinding bullcrap that screws him over game after game after game.

Much of the Desmond stuff is futuristic crap that makes more sense, but I honestly believe that the series would have developed much better if the games were small stories that added to a larger picture rather than a big picture broken up into smaller stories.

I mean, I hear even fanboys of the series saying "Oh, in this game, the Assassin's story is great, but Demond's story is the weak bit." Perhaps they should try giving Desmond a break? It's a tad too late now, if only they had planned ahead with the first game. Desmond was an interesting way to frame the first game, but it ultimately wasn't worth it.

Assassins Creed is more about the story, rather gameplay.

I loved Assassins Creed 1. For all it's repetitive complaints it got I didn't care. Back in 2007 AC was epic. The story made sense and gameplay overall was solid. I understood why I was killing the guys I did and the medieval time period is just plain awesome.

Then AC II came along and I started to like the AC series less. Story got confusing, didn't care so much for the characters, assassinations became less and less. By AC revelations I was feeling bored and it felt like a rehashed series. Then AC III I thought would be better but was subpar, the glitches really ruined it for me.

To this day AC 1 is the only AC game I have played over and over. Not a single other one on my shelf has been played through again, just can't do it.

Which is why I can't give the series a passing grade. As increasingly linear and repetitive as the gameplay has become between games, it still somewhat amuses me on some level, but if you're going to invest into the story department, you had better do it right, or it's going to hurt the game more than it's going to help.

You're right to feel that was because the man considered the creative mind behind the series did leave (though it was after II or during Brotherhood).

There is absolutely zero direction for the franchise. Basically if AC sells then Ubisoft gets five studios to scramble together different pieces, sew them together, and throw out the game in one year's time. If you ever feel a lack of cohesion between parts that's why. It's also why the games have generally been unpolished, AC III could even be considered unfinished given its technical issues.

Tons of people eat at McDonalds too, maybe we should burn all our Organic Food and chase away all the fine Restaraunts and eat nothing but McDonalds.

...Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's something we should aspire to. Surely we can do better than this.
