I would choose something no one is expecting.
The Spanish Inquisition.

The game's chief weapon would be fear, fear and surprise, its two chief weapons.

Still better than you.

.....most of you, at least.

"successful" is subjective.

But anyway, I'd have to say that it should take place in Russia during the 1920's/30's. So, surrouding the Soviet Union and its emergence etc. You can play as some random. And your mentor can be some important random.

The French Revolution would make sense but I'd personally like it to take place during feudal Japan.

That is something I would play.

2) The Desmond storyline is required since the who Animus thing, and also the small (read:HUGE) problem that the whole AC series is about Desmond finding a way to defeat Abstergo and the Templars. Not play Splinter Cell:1400s.
Bullcrap.

Desmond was the worst thing that could have happened to the Assassin's Creed series. It was an interesting way to frame the events of the first game, but when they tried to turn it into a storyline in and of itself, that's where things spiralled into the madness and mess that the series is currently in.

The stories of the Assassins of the past are already interesting and compelling enough, trying to constantly make them relevant to Desmond in the future and come up with stupid excuses for why you need to play through the life of his ancestors only sours what would be otherwise good stories of freedom versus order.

"I forgot where I put my car keys. BETTER JUMP IN THE ANIMUS AND FIND OUT!"

Which is why cutting out all that nonsense and focusing on the stories of the Assassins would be infinitely better. You can still have the pieces of Eden and the mystery and the Intrigue, and from the glyph puzzles we know there was Assassin involvement during World War II, it seems like the perfect game to reboot Assassins Creed into a decent history based action series with elements of science fiction woven in.

Screw Desmond. Screw Desmond to hell.

They stayed with Ezio too long and ruined the series. The Desmond storyline could make an interesting game in an of itself for a finale to the series...or Ubisoft can keep shoehorning in "Oh, but wait, there is ANOTHER of your ancestors that was an assassin, what a coincidence that you realize this right after you spent 4 games trying to find the Apple and ending the Templar threat in the modern day."

Ubisoft actually found a plot that lets them recycle the exact same gameplay and story, but just reskinning the weapons and cities to fit the time period.

I agree. I thought the idea of the Animus and Desmond's storyline was intriguing at first, but it's become too overbearing to the plot. The whole franchise doesn't need this whole conspiracy hanging over it surrounding Desmond and the end of the world. Frankly, I would rather play as different Assassin's during different periods of time without any of that. The Pieces of Eden do provide a good means for the Templars to achieve control, so I'm fine with that, I just really dislike Desmond.

My only other real gripe with the game is that it's too easy. I'd prefer stealth and planning to play a larger role in the game, as opposed to countering and being practically invincible.

It would be almost impossible to make a game with sword combat at that difficulty. It would either be too difficult or too easy.

The investigation part of the first game was good, where you basically cased out each target for a few missions. I'd like the game to go back to that and bring in more stealth aspects. Maybe borrow from Hitman and Chaos Theory

let's kick some ass and take some names... without takin' the names

A game touching on Britain's support of certain groups in India in order to overthrow the other groups could be interesting. Lots of potential for Templar through the British influence.

Be not afraid, for the forest nymphs have taught me how to pleasure a women.

Uhhh...

Set in...the old west...

The assassin has batman syndrome for guns...so he doesn't use guns...only blades...

The Alamo is a major battle. You assassinate Davy Crockett there and it's set during the Mexican-American war.

Also...there's a cover system...like Splinter Cell style. But no shadow hiding.

Man versus Force of Nature is not a very compelling or realistic conflict when that Man is expected to defeat said force of nature rather than survive it.

You and your friends are kidnapped by a crazy S-O-B on an island in the middle of no-where, and have to develop your skills to rescue them and defeat the evil in the island... oh, wait.

Seriously though, they should have gone with the other ending in ACIII. It could of set up the plot of later installments.

At least 1 century after Desmond's decision, humanity is rebuilding. The Assassin order still remains, watching over civilization and keeping an eye out for any sign of the Templar Order YADA YADA YADA Templar plot and uprising YADA YADA YADA...
Assassins and Templars attempting to find any trace of any POEs. (Insert generic bad guys have the upper-hand plot twist here) Templars attempt to shape how humanity will continue/exist, Assassins fight Templars like they do in every game etc.

This is perfect. Everything revolving around Desmond became much larger than it ever needed to be. It's Assassin's Creed. Focus on Assassins. While Desmond was an Assassin himself, the conflict of the Templars and the mentioned faction became shelved in a messy struggle to flesh out a new modern plot revolving around the end of the world.
That killed the series for me. I wanted to see Assassins and Templars remain the primary focus of the plot in every game, not the 2012 bull-blam!-.

I've got it
Opening:Modern day America

You see a desperate Ubisoft representative talking to what seems to be the player for ideas on the new "Assassins Creed" game. You know he is a phony, it's actually Foman. Your mission is to take Foman out, any means necessary. New items like tanks, planes, machine guns, and the internet are available to use.

Good luck, and may the assassin be with you.

I could believe it. BioWare is basically crowd sourcing ME4.
