Key

Best Story? Hmm... that's tough. I think I'll make a list. In order (mind you, these are, obviously, just ones I've played):

1.   [Reserved.. still thinking]
2.   Portal Series
3.   Half Life Series
4.   Halo 3: ODST
5.   Assassin's Creed Series
6.   Halo 3
7.   Fire Emblem Series
8.   World of Warcraft (there are plenty of storylines, trust me)
9.   Spec Ops: The Line
10. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

THe struggle between the two paddles- I had to laugh.

(Sorry, it didn't quote the first time, and I am unsure of how to get the quote up.)

The story in Starcraft is my favorite of all time. OF ALL TIME

An RTS? That's interesting. Not a massive fan of RTS' though.

MGS
Spec Ops
Arkham City

I love MGS series. I have Spec Ops, haven't played it yet.
I didn't really think Arkham City had that good a story.

The Half Life mod? I saw a video on it, quite interesting.

Far Cry 3, very deep emotional story

Not interested in Far Cry, I hated the second one.

Join the Halo Haven group!

Kotor 2(1 seemed to be a little bit 'dream world all powerful nothing can stop you' where as kotor 2 was a little but darker and more sinister, it helped the story imo), or far cry 3(the story in 2 wasnt all that), or Cod 4(i dont really like the other cod game's story) , or the halo games(especially ODST, the story in that was the best imo).

Kingdom Hearts (Anything up until 2 and Birth by Sleep)
KoTOR I & II
Halo (CE only, it's the guaranteed best for me. Halo 2 Bungie had to apologize for it, enough said. Halo 3 I felt lacked the hard hitting depth that made me feel like I were saving the world when I'm instead transported to somewhere not even remotely close to Earth: The Ark. Don't get me started on Reach, and Halo 4 was in total 6 hours long on Normal. Ridiculous)
Ratchet & Clank in terms of the main story games
Sly Cooper
Shadow of the Colossus
Legend of Zelda Series
Metroid Prime and everything that isn't Other M

To The Moon

This entire game was centered around the story. Most (i.e. basically all) of the replies in these thread are mainstream, gameplay-focused games which have generic, forgettable stories pasted on as a reason for the action. To The Moon will actually make you tear up at the end. It's in a whole different league.

Online Gaming's pretty much like a zombie movie. There are a lot of mindless idiots roaming around but you find some survivors on the way.

Assassin's Creed has an intriguing story right up to Revelations, then it got extremely stale.

Can't believe no has said the Kingdom Hearts series yet.

No way man, have you looked at the story lately? Literally everyone is part Sora or Xehanort and it's just stupid. They have to be making it up as they go along, there is no way they had that planned, and it gets more ridiculous with each game. I heard DDD added time travel to the mix making it worse.

I almost never play games for story, but my favorites are:
No More Heroes 1 and 2
Okami
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
Persona 3 and 4
Digital Devil Saga (at least until 2 got all crazy in the Sun)
Binary Domain
Kid Icarus: Uprising

the story makes perfect sense, you just have to fit the pieces together, kingdom hearts story is brilliant.

The Dragon Age series. You cannot fathom my excitement for the third instalment.

It started off simple enough with the first, but it gets more complicated and ridiculous with each new game. The famous google doc for the story doesn't even have DDD and it's pretty crazy.
