Well I just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion and I don't even know what I'm supposed to make of that ending.
Is it bad? Its the main reason I haven't started it yet. I've heard so much about the ending. You can kind of tell that the ending was just thrown together ambiguously due to funding or budget. However, since the series became such a hit the creator was able to go back through and finish his work through the movie, End of Evangelion. It basically shows what happens before the final episode and concludes the series as well. The final episode of the series can also fit snugly within the events of the movie, so in the end it makes sense.
So I have to watch the movie to understand the ending?I'd recommend you watch the movie just for the sake of not feeling as though the ending just dropped you off a cliff. I love Neon Genesis Evangelion, but I'd be lying if I said the ending to the original series did the anime justice.
I remember when I first watched the series on Toonami and made it to the final episode. When it finished I thought I had missed something. It was a back to back episode that night and the episode after that was the first episode again. Needless to say I felt utterly confused and had to look up if that was the actual ending or not.
The series is really good in my opinion, but I'm glad there's End of Evangelion to wrap things up for the anime. However I can only praise the latest Rebuild movies of the series, as they are absolutely superb.
