<(-_-)> Teh mokey is not amused

In the fellowship of the ring Gimli mentions several times about passing through the mines of moria and how his cousin would be there to meet and greet them. He also expresses genuine surprise/horror at seeing the dwarves there dead. However in the Hobbit film we discover that moria was already infested with orcs/goblins long before the events of LOTR and that the dwarves knew this, as they tried to reclaim it once forced out of Erebor.

Is there something I missed or is it just an overlook by the story-writers?

Mreh.

Gimli spent a couple centuries as a hermit in Harad.

Your average nice guy on The Flood.... D: ..... WAIT A MINUTE....

The Dwarves they found included Balin, one of the Dwarves that was on the Erebor quest. Balin was leading an expedition to try and take back Moria (they didn't know if the orcs were still there or not,) but was killed. This happened some time after the Hobbit.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Maybe they didn't think it was infested anymore and move back in?

Moria was fought over during the hobbit, and its says that the dwarves won. IDK though.

Moria was taken back, then lost again sometime between The Hobbit and LOTR.

After the battle of the 5 armies, which we will see in part 3 of 'The Hobbit', Balin heads with an expedition towards Moria on order to reclaim it for the dwarves once again.
