Subject: LoTR nerds get in here

A troll thrusting a spear into him didn't kill or hurt frodo, but a spider stinger would???

What world are you living in.
As seen in the movie, Shelob can impale crows with the utmost precision. Thus, it can be assumed that her stinger is small enough to slip through the mail.

Likewise, a spear, although having a sharp point, is thick enough for the True-silver to protect Frodo.

Then again, this is my own speculation and supported by no fact; you very well could have found a loophole in the story.

Is it possible that the mail shirt just folded up on itself when Frodo fell, leaving his stomach exposed for the stinger to impale him?

Originally created for a dwarf, it would hang low over a hobbits thin shoulders.

Brainwashing, idiotic media: "hur dur, vido gaems cas vilenc n iz nt gud. dey ned 2 b baned."

Logic: Really? Then please explain how there's violence in third world countries. I guess they're all poor due to the large amount of video games they buy.

Its stabbed him in the neck did it not?
Nope Stomach

In this scene just minutes before his encounter with Shelob, we can see the mithril coat is actually way below his neck. Frodo's upper chest is unprotected!

I don't think anyone has ever said 'lolLoTR' before.

Where are the nerds? I thought we would be discussing Hobbit genealogy and the importance of dates in the lore of Middle-Earth.

Funny I was thinking the same thing the other day.

Maybe the mithril protected him from dying by the poison?

Ok Op, allow me to answer this for you, since you seem to be referring to the film.

The mithril mail still allows the attack to happen, as shown in Moria, where is is impaled by the troll, however it does not actually would you.

However, the catch, I believe they are getting at with the spider, is that the attack still happened, and although the attack did not kill/wound Frodo, thanks to the mail, the stinger still went into him, where he was stabbed, and as such was able to release the poison.

dat feeling when you plow a multi-ton covenant war machine.

The spear that the troll used was rather blunt and wide-of-blade, which would prevent it from entirely entering the mail, however, it doesn't say frodo remained unscathed. He could very well have recieved a minor wound from the point of the spear, saved only by the grace of the mail.

shelob's stinger was much sharper, and would have less trouble entering chainmail, plus, only the tip would need to hit frodo anyway in order to deliver the poison.

so in essence, the chainmail may have stopped frodo from being gored on both accounts, but was ineffective on shelob's piecing attack.

"It is the cruelest fate, to have written words that meant well and see them made wicked and unwise. What was meant to encourage life, used instead to justify taking it."

That's a movie-only plot hole. The book specifies that he was stung in the neck, where the mithril shirt wasn't protecting him.
