John also has speed and reflexes, so Shep would have a hard time actually hitting him, then we have to realize that if John has an M6D, he's basically conquered mid to long range. The AR,assuming it's the book's version of the MA5B, is a 60 round mag monster, that can, and will shred its targets. While in the game the MA5B is inaccurate, that is a simple balancing act for the game, in reality, the gun is quite accurate.
As for the shotgun, it doesn't matter which one it is, it's an 8 gauge, which is enough to break an arm from simply firing..
Then we look at John's training and experience, and you'll see that he outclasses Shep in every way.
I like Mass Effect, but Sheppard would lose.
